Oscar Pistorius breaks down at girlfriend murder hearing
Paralympic superstar Oscar Pistorius broke down in tears in court today as he was formally charged with the murder of his model girlfriend.
But the double amputee, who stood with his head bowed as one charge of murder was read out to him, this afternoon released a statement offering his "deepest sympathies" to the family of his dead girlfriend as he denied her murder in the "strongest terms".
The 26-year-old is accused of killing of FHM cover girl Reeva Steenkamp, aged 30, whose name was officially revealed for the first time at the hearing in Pretoria Magistrates' Court.
The statement said: "The alleged murder is disputed in the strongest terms."
Pistorius had been expected to apply for bail, but this has been postponed until Tuesday after the defence and prosecution agreed to allow more time for this process to be dealt with.
He will be held in custody until then.
