Dalton joined the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in his young life and started work with the BBC in 1968. During the 1970's he spent most of his time on stage with the Royal Shakespeare Company. It was not until 1987 that he predeceased Roger Moore as 007 in his first Bond movie The Living Daylights.
