Robbers armed with a sledgehammer and crowbar robbed security guards in a terrifying raid in Rugeley.

Two men smashed their way into Nationwide building society in Brook Square at 7.25pm last night. They confronted the guards, who were delivering cash to the branch.

A third man waited outside. All the robbers wore black balaclavas and dark clothing.

The guards handed over a substantial amount of cash and the raiders ran off between Coral bookmakers and Barclays Bank towards the car park off Wellington Drive. It is believed they may have used a silver estate to make their getaway.

Police are appealing for witnesses to call 101, quoting incident number 623 of December 3, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
