Police were today hunting the driver of the empty 77-seater double decker which caused the trail of destruction in Wolverhampton. No-one was hurt in the incidents.

The person behind the wheel ran off after leaving the vehicle which was too badly damaged to move following the string of smashes in Coleman Street, Whitmore Reans.

The damage started when the bus cannoned into the back of a parked white van, badly damaging the vehicle. A short distance later it crashed into a stationary Nissan Micra that was shunted into a Corsa by the impact as the bus went on to collide with a lamp post. Witnesses said that the driver then fled and police were called.

Officers spent up to 90 minutes tracing the registered driver of the Evergreen Coaches bus that takes children to and from school in the morning and afternoon.

He is understood to have told officers that the bus had been stolen from outside his home in Whitmore Reans where it had been while he had a rest inside.

It is thought that the owner had not realised the vehicle was missing before the incidents at around 1pm yesterday.
