Drivers were warned today of disruption due to the overnight closure of two major roads in Staffordshire. Highways bosses said diversions would be in place.

The A5 northbound between Wall Island and Muckley Corner in Burntwood will be closed from 9pm starting next Monday.

Roadworks will also shut the nearby southbound A38 in the Swinfen area of Lichfield from Wednesday.

Both routes need to be repaired and transport bosses will put a number of diversions in place.

Jessica Kenny, for the Highways Agency, said: "Works have been carefully planned to keep disruption to a minimum."

Both roads will be closed between 9pm and 6am. The A5 repairs are due to be completed by September 14. Traffic will be diverted at Weeford Island to the A38, Cappers Lane, Trent Valley Road, Church Street, Birmingham Road, Sainte Foy Avenue, Limburg Avenue and the A461 to rejoin the A5 at Muckley Corner.

Further disruption is expected on the A38, between HMP Swinfen and Swinfen Island from next Wednesday for eight days.

Motorists will be diverted via the A5148 and A5 to Weeford Roundabout where they can rejoin the A38.
