A driver died today when his car was hit on the motorway near Birmingham Airport, causing traffic problems for motorists and holiday-makers.

Police closed the northbound carriageway between junctions five at Knowle and six for Birmingham Airport following the collision at about 4.30am.

Drivers faced delays of more than an hour with queues stretching back to junction 3a for the M40.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: "Police were alerted to the incident at around 4.35am this morning by a member of the public who dialled 999.

"The driver was taken to a hospital where he died a short time later. It is thought the car was struck by a lorry on the northbound carriageway."

People travelling to the airport were urged to come off at junction five and follow the gold circle diversion route.

One lane of the carriageway was reopened just after 8am.
