Drivers faced motorways misery in the West Midlands as roadworks, a crash and the end of the school half term holiday combined to cause chaos.

Rush hour traffic on the M6 and M5 was reduced to a crawl as families returning from breaks added to the usual heavy commuter usage yesterday afternoon.

A caravan jackknifed on the M5 between Junction 4a in Bromsgrove and Junction 5 at Droitwich southbound, causing queues stretching back to Junction 1 in Smethwick and the M6.

Tailbacks were also caused northbound as drivers slowed down to look at the accident.

Congestion in that direction on the M5 was created by ongoing repair works to the Carters Lane bridge between Junction 4 Bromsgrove and Junction 3 Halesowen.
