A teacher from the Black Country has admitted possessing over 860 indecent images of children.

Robin Worrall, of Smethwick, pleaded guilty to 10 counts of possessing indecent photographs of children and two of possessing 96 pornographic images involving animals, at Warley Magistrates Court yesterday.

The court heard 60-year-old Worrall's computer was seized and searched on April 1 after a tip-off to the police. He had taught at Great Barr's former Dartmouth High School, now Q3 Academy, and West Bromwich's George Salter Secondary School, now known as George Salter Collegiate Academy, before becoming a supply teacher in 1999.

There is no suggestion any of the photographs are of children from the schools at which Worrall taught.

Mrs Virinder Baines, prosecuting, said the computer was seized from the house in Park Road where Worrall, who has been a teacher since the age of 20, lived with his wife.

The search revealed 862 images of children of varying extremity, Mrs Baines added.

Magistrates decided their sentencing powers were not strong enough to deal with the case and committed it to Wolverhampton Crown Court.

Worrall who was a science and IT specialist, will be sentenced on August 9. He was granted conditional bail until his sentence. He declined to comment after the hearing.

The local education authority, Q3 Academy and George Salter Collegiate Academy all declined to comment on ongoing court proceedings.
