The award for Britain's most romantic MP goes to Aidan Burley – who proposed to his long-term girlfriend Helen Boyle on bended knee on the roof of the Palace of Westminster.

The Cannock Chase MP had hidden a bottle of champagne and two glasses amid the neo-gothic spires before he popped the question.

The couple were celebrating the TV fashion presenter's 32nd birthday at the House of Commons on Tuesday.

After being wined and dined, Miss Boyle followed Mr Burley up onto the roof to scale the dizzy heights of Westminster to take in the capital's magnificent skyline – unaware of the surprise to come.

Mr Burley, also 32, went down on one knee and proposed and as Miss Boyle said "yes", Big Ben chimed 6.45pm.

He said afterwards: "It was such a special moment for us both.

"Being so high up gave us wonderful views over a bustling Westminster and yet it was so quiet and serene.

"The weather was just beautiful, and having gone down on one knee, the best part of all happened – she said yes!"

The couple plan to get married next year in the bride's picturesque home village in Herefordshire.

Miss Boyle has appeared as a fashion stylist on ITV's This Morning and Sky's Angela and Friends, and was a producer on Channel 4's Gok's Fashion Fix, with celebrity style guru Gok?Wan.

The Conservative MP was last month ranked among the most sexiest of Westminster's parliamentarians on a new cheeky website founded by Made In Chelsea star Francis Boulle.

Mr Burley was elected last May, winning the Cannock Chase seat with a sensational 14 per cent swing from Labour.

The New Zealand-born MP was educated in Birmingham and at Oxford University.

He is a member of the Home Affairs Select Committee and in January was appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary to Transport Secretary Philip Hammond.
