A new girls' free school in Sandwell could move into an Oldbury school building once pupils there move to a £20 million new site.

Education chiefs say they are considering letting the Griffin Schools Trust take on the former lower school of Oldbury Academy, in Moat Road.

The authority says if the free school takes over the site, it would also have to take on primary school pupils.

The site is currently occupied by Oldbury College of Sport, which is due to move into new £20 million premises in Pound Road.

It had previously been mooted pupils from the over-subscribed Bristnall Hall Technology College nearby could switch to the Moat Road site, providing extra space.

Griffins Schools Trust director Liz Lewis said: "We're working very much with the council at the moment. We've not looked at other sites in the authority for the moment as we wait for this decision."

The proposals for Moat Road are revealed in a report to Councillor Bob Badham, the authority's education chief, which will be discussed on Thursday.
