Teenager Mark Saul, from Dudley, set up the event single-handed at Tettenhall's Mount Hotel, which included after-dinner speech by former Wolves winger Daley and a chat with Wharton, who played for the club in the 1960s.

Proud dad Steve Saul: "It was his idea and he did all the hard work himself – he really put a lot effort into making it a success for such a good cause."

Meanwhile, a fundraising dinner in aid of the Smile For Joel charity organised by Steve has been rescheduled for March 21 after heavy snow forced its postponement on March 1.

West Midlands football legends John Richards, Tony Brown and Gary Shaw are among several big names who will be at Dudley’s Copthorne Hotel, with speaker for the evening is former Wolves striker Steve Kindon and comedy will be provided by Gary Marshall.

It is the second year the event has been held in aid of the Smile for Joel charity, which was set up in memory of Joel Richards, Adrian Evans and Patrick Evans, who were killed during the Tunisia terror attacks of 2015.

Organiser Steve Saul is hoping to better the success of last year’s dinner, where £6,000 was raised on the night.

Tickets for the event are still available at a cost of £54 per person, with a table for ten people costing £400 plus VAT. There will be a former player on each table, with Steve Daley, Mel Eves, Kenny Hibbitt, Don Goodman, Chris Nicholl and Geoff Horsfield among the other stars scheduled to attend.
