The star played a video of Bon Jovi keyboardist David Bryan wishing the young cast of the musical Memphis, currently playing at the Arena Theatre in Wulfruna Street, good luck for the production.

Beverley, 44, was a member of the am-dram group as a teenager, going on to star in the West End version of Memphis, which saw her nominated for Best Actress In A Musical at the 2015 Olivier Awards.

Also at the show was Sharon Bishop, a teacher at Highfields School, Penn, where she was a pupil, who revealed that the star paid for more than 50 pupils to see the musical in London during its run.

She said: "We'd invited her to Highfields to see a production we were putting on but she couldn't come because of her commitment to the show, so she paid for tickets for everyone to come down and see her instead. It was a wonderful gesture."
