He has taken on the lead role in Wolverhampton Grand Theatre's summer play season which opened last night.

The actor, who played Albert Square's dimwitted street cleaner Robbie Jackson for 11 years, has been reunited with his former EastEnders co-star Gemma Bissix for the light-hearted crime thriller Murder In Play.

Former Doctor Who actress Katy Manning, who appeared alongside Jon Pertwee in the early 1970s, also appears in the play about an amateur dramatics group which is thrown into turmoil when a member of its cast is murdered.

Gaffney has tackled the lead role in the show, despite him having battled back to health following the car crash in January. Father-of-two Dean required major surgery on his skull after the accident in Derbyshire.

He had been travelling to accommodation he was staying in after performing at a theatre in Buxton.

The actor yesterday said that he was delighted to be back in Wolverhampton and had many fond memories of the last time he appeared at the Grand, in another Ian Dickens summer series around three years ago

The play will run in the city until Saturday.
