George Salter Academy, based in Davey Road, will be staging Sister Act this coming month.

Young actors and actresses have been busy rehearsing three times a week for multiple hours a day, and have been doing so for almost six months.

Head of drama at the academy Josie Clarke said all members of the cast, and behind the scenes, had been working extremely hard.

She said: “The students have been rehearsing two hours a day, three hours a week since back in September.

“It’s going really well so far.”

The performance is based on the 1992 Musical Comedy film Sister Act, written by Joseph Howard, starring Whoopi Goldberg.

The classic film is about a young singer who is put into witness protection after her mother is murdered – given a new identity as a nun in California.

In an attempt to keep her out of trouble, the nuns assign her to the convent’s choir, which soon gains widespread attention.

Lead performers in the show are Jazmine Seaton, playing the role of Deloris Wilson, Niamh Carr, playing The Mother Superior and Dane Davies who is acting as Curtis.

The School’s Sister Act cast is made up of 60 students from the ages of 11 to 18. The production of the show was announced last year as the school held auditions for cast members from June to September.

Previous musicals performed by the school include Hairspray, Fame, Les Miserables and Oliver.

The musical will be performed before audiences from February 12 to 14 at 6.30pm in the school’s Green Room theatre.

Josie added that tickets are selling well, as the last show on Thursday night only has two rows of seats left.

Ticket prices are set at £6 for children and concessions, and £8 for adults.
