And now the historical place of worship has been lit up once again following its award-winning Christmas light and sound show last year.

This year’s theme, ‘Star of Wonder, Star of Light’, presents the nativity story in mesmerising images and sounds across the west front of the cathedral.

The projections feature in various locations around the Cathedral Close moving visitors on a mesmerising journey.

Once inside visitors can enjoy further projections, readings at the crib, the annual Christmas Tree Festival and a Star installation.

The cathedral’s artist-in-residence Peter Walker has also teamed up with 5,000 pupils from 13 local schools to create the Starry Starry Night art installation, which will run alongside the Christmas illumination's.

The art work, supported using public funding by Arts Council England, is currently on display in the Chapter House.

It is made of up of thousands of individual gold stars hanging from the ceiling with messages of peace and Christmas wishes that have been thoughtfully decorated and written out by the school children.

Adrian Dorber, Dean of Lichfield Cathedral, said: “The children have worked incredibly hard to create thoughtful and moving messages about the importance of hope and peace in our world. As always, the outstanding contribution of schools and young people is at the heart of this project.”

Guests visiting the installation will also be able to visit the cathedral’s Christmas Tree Festival which has over 50 Christmas trees on display, uniquely decorated by local schools businesses and charities.

Images from Christmas editions of the Lichfield Mercury dating back to the 1960s also form a feature on the south side of the cathedral.

The display runs until this Saturday (23), with the exception of tomorrow (THURS 21).

Tickets cost £4 for adults, £3 for children and £10 for a family ticket.

The event is almost sold out, so visit www.lichfield-cathedral.org to check availability first.
