Curtain raised on theatre show

The curtain was raised on a five night production by a Stafford am dram group last night.

Stafford Players are staging their production of Alan Ayckbourn’s Relatively Speaking – starting last night and continuing until Saturday.

The show is being performed in the Met Theatre at the Stafford Gatehouse Theatre in Eastgate Street.

The production was Alan Ayckbourn’s first big hit – written when he was in his mid-20s.

While the original breakthrough production, back in 1967, starred Celia Johnson, Michael Hordern and a youngRichard Briers.

Publicity coordinator for the Stafford Players, Brenda Hunt, said: "We've been rehearsing for about three months and lots of hard work has gone into the production.

"We've been having two rehearsals a week including two full Sunday rehearsals.

"We do three productions a year, the one we're doing in November is called Breaking The Code which is about Alan Turing.

As soon as this play is over the rehearsals will start for that."

In 2013, a revival of the play ran for three months at Wyndham’s Theatre in London, starring Felicity Kendal as Sheila.

It tells the story of two sets of couples; one younger and one older. The younger lady and older man are having an affair, whilst the younger man thinks the older couple are the younger lady’s parents.

Those behind the show say the audiences are in for a 'hilarious' evening.

This production sees Andrea Keady makes her stage debut for the Stafford Players.

Ginny is played by Amy-Beth Dann, who previously play Linda in Ladies’ Day, Mimi in Allo ‘Allo and Honey in Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?

While the roles of Philip and Greg are both played by experienced actors David Parton and David Pritchard. It is being directed by David Harfield directs.

Relatively Speaking is on from Tuesday, May 16 to Saturday, May 20 at Stafford’s Gatehouse Theatre.
