Alice Levine and Maya Jama will co-host Channel 4’s new social media-style reality show.

Contestants, housed in separate apartments in one modern block of flats, will only communicate with each other online in the series.

The Circle is billed as a “ground-breaking social media popularity contest” which will ask “provocative questions” about how people interact and forge their own identity in the age of social media.

Jama said: “Social media is such a huge part of everyone’s lives… there is no escaping it…

“I’m so excited to be a part of the first ever reality show which plays around with this.”

Fellow DJ and presenter Levine said: “It’s exciting to be involved in such a timely show, plus, now getting sucked into an Instagram vortex is necessary ‘research’.”

A “bespoke”, voice-activated social media platform, called The Circle, will enable contestants to “chat, make friends, argue and maybe even fall in love” on the show, aired by the former broadcaster of Big Brother.

Players, who could win up to £50,000, will only get to know each other from what they choose to reveal through The Circle.

When someone is “blocked” they will learn about “who they have really been interacting with”.
