Beverley Knight backs Wolverhampton's Young Citizen of the Year

Wolverhampton's very own singing sensation, Beverley Knight, has joined the search for the city's next Young Citizen of the Year.

The annual award recognises youngsters who have gone the extra mile and made a significant contribution to the city.

Beverley, who grew up in the Penn area, said it was "vital" young people are recognised.

She said: “I think it’s vital that young people have a chance to be celebrated in our great city.

“All of us in Wolverhampton have a vested interest in nurturing and encouraging our young.

“Let’s celebrate Wolverhampton’s youth; we’ve got a lot to offer in this great city of ours and I couldn’t be more proud.”

Other famous faces supporting the 2019 awards include Wolves captain Conor Coady and Black Country comedienne Doreen Tipton.

The Young Citizen of the Year award is organised by the city's five Rotary clubs, in partnership with Wolverhampton Council, the Express & Star, Wolverhampton Wanderers Foundation, Waitrose and The Way Youth Zone – and is now in its sixth year.

It will be given o a youngster who is over the age of 13 on 1 January 2019 and under the age of 19 on 31 August 2019, who is living, studying or working within city boundaries.

Emma Bennett, Wolverhampton Council’s director of children’s services, said: “Young people are an important part of our city and are integral in helping to shape its future.

"It is great that we have the chance to celebrate their achievements which help Wolverhampton to grow.”

The deadline for nominations is May 31.
