Walsall music star Jorja Smith nominated for Grammy Award

Jorja Smith has been nominated for a Grammy Award.

The Walsall musician features in the Best New Artist category alongside the likes of Chloe X Halle, Luke Combs, Greta Van Fleet, H.E.R., Dua Lipa, Margo Price and Bebe Rexha.

Talking about the nomination on Twitter, former Aldridge School pupil Jorja thanked her fans for an amazing year.

"I have no words, dropped a video today too and got nominated for a Grammy," the post said.

"I love what I am doing, it can get a lot sometimes but everything is worth it. Always".

The news follows the release of her new music video for single The One, directed by Hector Dockrill.

The 21-year-old singer has enjoyed a successful 2018, which has seen her release her debut album Lost and Found.

Jorja won the Critics' Choice Award at the Brits earlier this year, where she performed alongside Rag 'N' Bone Man.

The star has been named among the top 50 'Movers and Shakers Of The Moment', and was also nominated for this year's Mercury Prize.

Bursting onto the scene in 2016 with her critically-acclaimed debut single Blue Lights, Jorja was subsequently tipped for success by a plethora of publications including The Fader, i-D Magazine, Pitchfork, NPR, Vogue and more.

In 2017, Jorja, went on to support mega-star Bruno Mars on the US-leg of his world tour, collaborated with Drake and also co-wrote I Am - her solo single on the number one Black Panther soundtrack - with rapper Kendrick Lamar.

Jorja has also worked with the likes of Kali Uchis and Stormzy, who is set to headline Glastonbury Festival next year.

Nominations

The Grammys will be handed out at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles on February 10.

British singer Ella Mai also landed two nominations, for song of the year and best R&B song for Boo'd Up.

In the song of the year category, she will compete against Kendrick Lamar and SZA for All The Stars, God's Plan by Drake, In My Blood by Shawn Mendes, The Joke by Brandi Carlile, The Middle by Zedd, Maren Morris and Grey, Shallow by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper from the film A Star Is Born and This Is America by Childish Gambino.

Drake and Lamar lead the nominations for the music awards, with seven each, including the coveted album of the year.

Lamar is nominated for his work on the Black Panther soundtrack, while Drake is nominated for Scorpion, alongside Cardi B's Invasion Of Privacy, By The Way, I Forgive You by Brandi Carlile, H.E.R. by H.E.R. Beerbongs and Bentleys by Post Malone, Dirty Computer by Janelle Monae and Golden Hour by Kacey Musgraves.
