Black Sabbath icon Tony Iommi has won the Kerrang! Icon Award.

The Aston-born guitar legend picked up the award at the Islington Assembly Hall ceremony in London last night.

Tony, who is often credited with effectively inventing heavy metal with his innovative sound and unique playing style, won the accolade after the magazine's readers cast their votes in his favour during 'an open process', says Kerrang!.

The 70-year-old icon reportedly received a standing ovation when he collected his award at the end of the night.

Other stars celebrated at the annual presentation was Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, who dedicated the band's award for Best International Band to the late Chester Bennington of Linkin Park, Slipknot and Stone Sour frontman Corey Taylor who was named the Kerrang! Legend winner, and Aerosmith's Joe Perry, who was presented the Kerrang! Inspiration Award by his Hollywood Vampires bandmate Johnny Depp.

Tony Iommi will discuss tales from his history with Black Sabbath and beyond at question-and-answer show at Birmigham Town Hall tomorrow night.
