Winners: Marihsz Wowak, Harry Singh, Vinod Khullar, Rupi Kaur, and Sunny Singh.

Queens Fish Bar, on Wheel Lane in Lichfield, claimed the prize in the Express & Star’s Chip Shop of the Year for Mid-Staffordshire.

Chippys were rated by the number of tokens handed in by readers, while there was also a mystery shopper element which saw the takeaway taste test.

Joe Singh, owner of the restaurant, said: “Firstly, you’re only as good as the ingredients you sell and the second part is the staff that actually go and serve the food and deliver it to customers.

“The customer, in turn, takes the time to vote for us.

“It’s a combination of the three.”

The shop, which opened around six years ago, marks the second shop of three opened by the family – the first being in Droitwich, followed by a shop in Ashby, in Leicestershire.

“It’s a jewel in the crown,” he said of the Lichfield shop. It was a shut down computer shop before and I loved the area of Lichfield – I think it’s beautiful – and I always wanted to come here and felt I had something to offer.”

The 37-year-old, who is originally from Birmingham but now lives in the area, said fresh fish was his secret to success.

“The most popular thing is our fish and chips – it’s popular because we use fresh products. We’ll definitely be celebrating.”

The Jolly Fryer, based in Fernwood shopping centre in Rugeley, finished runner-up.

Runner-up: Abby-Leigh Morris and Andrew Partou from The Jolly Fryer

Owner Andrew Partou said: “No-one likes to finish second – people want to win.

“Having been here since 1983 we’re very grateful for our loyal customers who went out of the way to buy the Express & Star and put in the tokens.

“Our customers come in every week so of course we’re always very grateful over the years – and for many more years ahead.”

The family-run chippy has been running for more than 30 years.

Mr Partou said he was a “little gutted” not to win – but said he would try to claim the title next year.

He said: “We’ve got battered Creme eggs and we update people on our Facebook page. Whatever the customers ask for we give it to them.

"People enjoyed coming in with the tokens and putting it in the box. They enjoyed the paper and it’s what it is and I’m very grateful. You want to win things.

“We use fresh fish and we try to get the best quality.

“You never want to compromise on quality.

“We’re very happy and grateful.”

Fish Face, Willow Court, Lichfield, finished third.
