Iain Stirling, Birmingham Rep Theatre – Review

You may not recognise his face, but you will certainly know his voice.

That's because Iain Stirling is the voice behind award-winning Love Island – which is something he even acknowledges himself.

Introducing his own show at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre as part of his U Ok Hun? X tour with a voice over that you'd think you were watching the summer reality television show left the audience in stitches. Iain does well not to spin his show around Love Island, instead entertaining the audience with his own life stories and experiences.

He has a lot to say about being 30 surrounded by his married friends, his now boring friends, having to go to dinner parties (with people who drink wine too slow) and his struggles in dealing with his friend's baby. His frustration and anger about it all made it a whole lot funnier and relatable to those in the audience aged in their late twenties to early thirties.

His rundown on how men are emotionally and with their friends, compared to women is second to none. And the anecdotes about women trying to get the perfect photo is completely relatable to millennials.

Before he became known as 'Mr Love Island', Stirling was a children's television presenter and the second half of his set includes hilariously funny tales about a doomed stand-up gig for eight-year-olds and an conversation with a youngster about where he came from.

He conversed with the audiences on a number of occasions, which naturally weaved into his set. And it is hard not to love him skipping all over the stage with his charismatic energy.

Minutes into the show my sides were hurting from laughing and he proved even funnier on stage than he is behind the camera. The hour-long set seemed to fly by with his animated, uncensored performance. If you get the chance to catch Iain Stirling performing stand-up he is definitely worth the watch!
