Birmingham Heritage Week launched as photography competition winner revealed

It showcases the best of Birmingham – now this image is helping launch a celebration of culture and heritage in the city.

Birmingham Heritage Week will this year bring together 150 events across the city honouring its culture, history and people.

To mark heritage week, the Best of Birmingham photography competition was established to highlight some of the city’s most loved and iconic places.

The launch hosted at Birmingham Cathedral officially kicked off events running until September 17.

The Best of Birmingham competition, launched by Instagramers of Birmingham group, Birmingham Museums Trust and Brumpic, has been running throughout the summer.

The competition has also been supported by Trevor Beattie and The Jack and Ada Beattie Foundation.

In total, 25 images have been chosen, with winners including Kris Askey, Ella Mullins, and Tim Cornbill, who was recently crowned winner at the 2017 Sony World Photography Awards (Open competition) in the architecture category.

Snaps feature sights including the Birmingham markets, Moor Street Station, Clent Hills, Digbeth, and Sarehole Mill.

Photographer Sam McAuliffe, aged 18, from Erdington has been named overall winner, with his striking image of the Birmingham canals with The Cube in the background.

As winner Sam will see his image used on marketing and promotional material for the exhibition.

The images will be framed and displayed at an exhibition at the Museum of the Jewellery Quarter from November 10 to January, along with 25 highly commended images which will be shown digitally for the first week.

These winners include Sarah Allen, Kalpesh Patel, and Waes Kay.

Images will be available to purchase, with all proceeds going towards supporting Birmingham Museums Trust and keeping Birmingham’s heritage alive.

Beth Astington of IGers Birmingham, said: “We are incredibly excited about this project and collaborating with Birmingham Museums Trust, which is such a prestigious and important organisation.

"The entries were of extremely high standard which is testament to the talent within the IGers Birmingham community.”

As the events for Birmingham Heritage Week begin there are activities taking place at city sites which include Aston Hall, Coffin Works, Two Towers Brewery and New Hall Mill.
