Sandwell skatepark to host model car event

Remote control cars will take to the ramps of a Sandwell skatepark for the first time later this month, after the idea was put forward by a local schoolboy.

Kiernan Blick, who will celebrate his ninth birthday on Monday(22), came up with the concept after always wanting to ride his RC ca on the ramps in Lightwoods Park, in Bearwood.

So, he wrote to the staff at Lightwoods House asking if he and his friends would be allowed to use part of the skatepark for their remote control cars – and the concept for an event called Cars Ride The Ramps was born.

The event, which is free to attend for RC enthusiasts who book a place, will take place on Saturday, April 27, with two sessions between 9am and 9.45am, and 10am and 10.45am.

Kiernan, who helped design the poster and worked with staff at Lightwoods House to come up with the rules of the event, said he was "really excited" that his dream had become a reality.

The Abbey Junior School pupil said: "I've always wanted to use my remote control car on the ramps but I was worried I would get in the way of people with skateboards. So I wrote to Lightwoods House and asked if it would be possible to have a bit of the ramps for me and my friends to play on with our cars.

"All of a sudden we were having a meeting and arranging a proper event for us to do it. I am really grateful for the opportunity and really pleased my idea was listened to."
