There was no ducking out when scores of yellow plastic chicks were thrown into the canal for an annual water race.

Back for a second year, the Black Country Duck Race held at The Tenth Lock Pub in Brierley Hill raises money for Mary Stevens Hospice.

Excitement mounted on the canalside as the numbered ducks were hurled into the water and started to float slowly in the direction of the finish line where crowds of onlookers urged them on.

Most of the ducks stayed in a bunch in the middle of the water as yesterday's event got under way but breakaway groups formed before some ambitious 'contestants' even tried to go it alone.

The ducks had been bought for £3-a-head as part of the charity a fundraiser and many of their owners, competing for a £100 top prize, turned up to cheer them on.

There was ducking and there was diving as the weather – along with some assistance from the local fire service and their hoses – determined the ducks' course.

The canal antics were the highlight of a free family fun day which included appearances from special guests, former Albion midfielder Ian Hamilton and club mascot Baggie Bird.

Amanda Bowen, deputy head of fundraising at the hospice, said: “It’s events like this that make such a difference to our patients. It was a spectacular community event which makes it even more special. We’re so grateful to The Tenth Lock and co-sponsor Canalside Tackle for making it possible."

Chere Griffin, Tenth Lock manager, said: “Last year we had great fun and raised loads of money for the brilliant work of the hospice and the families they support. Soon after we had a meeting to make sure it would happen again this year.”
