Thousands of people from all ages joined in the festivities at private and public parties.

Over 1,000 aerial displays thrilled a big crowd at Wolverhampton Racecourse who were treated to a pyrotechnic spectacular that lasted 20 minutes and required 20km of fuse wire to stage.

The excitement started with a fireworks display especially for children and this was followed by the lighting of a massive bonfire, stacked with more than 2,000 wooden pallets, by the city's Mayor Councillor Elias Mattu an hour before the main show began.

Councillor John Reynolds, cabinet member for city economy, said: "We were delighted to work with the racecourse again this year. It is a great place to really take in the amazing firework display as well as enjoy all the other entertainment that was lined up.”

Around 20,000 people crammed into Himley Hall and Park to watch a sensational half hour fireworks display accompanied by a series of top tunes amid celebrations with a Girl Power theme.

The fuse wire used was enough to light four kilometres of motorway and three kilometres of fencing. The bonfire centrepiece included 1,200 pallets.

Councillor Ian Kettle, cabinet member responsible for tourism, said: “This was many months in the planning and culminated in the biggest fireworks display in the West Midlands. It attracts around 20,000 people every year."
