Charlotte Howdle, aged 16, was preparing to travel to Devon for a week-long residential course when the call came.

The Stafford Grammer pupil, who comes from Lichfield, was intending to attend the Dartington International Summer School for expert tuition in an advanced masterclass.

But out of the blue she received a plea to replace the VIP guest who was due to perform in front of 300 top flight delegates – but had fallen ill.

The professional violinist was from the Heath Quartet – an acclaimed British chamber ensemble. She was due to perform in a recital written by British composer and Master of the Queen's Music, Judith Weir – who would be attending the event.

Charlotte admits her first thought was that she did not want to do it.

She would have just two days to learn two new pieces before taking to the stage with celebrated violinist/ recording artist Madeleine Mitchell.

Madeleine, a professor at the Royal College of Music, has performed in 50 countries.

Charlotte said: "The thought of playing in front of so many phenomenal musicians and the composer made me so nervous. But I realised it would be the opportunity of a lifetime.

"To stand by her and play a piece which had been specially written was incredible. It was even more special to perform it in front of the composer. The fact that she trusted me to do it has given my confidence a real boost."

Charlotte's sister Olivia, who is also a violinist, joined her in Dartington. The sisters picked up tips and had the opportunity of playing in small groups alongside music graduates and retired professionals.

Charlotte and Olivia are members of the CBSO Youth Orchestra. Charlotte represents the National Youth String Orchestra.

Olivia, aged 13, plays in the National Children's Orchestra of Great Britain. She was chosen to perform on Classic FM online radio.

A film of Olivia playing her violin at the summer school was posted on the station's website where it has received nearly 60,000 hits. Olivia has been invited to join Charlotte at London's junior Royal College of Music Saturday school.
