It is based on Ernest Cline's award-winning 2011 book of the same name, a dystopian science fiction novel.

The Jewellery Quarter has been transformed into a futuristic urban setting with graffiti lining the walls, American street signs erected, and rusted cars with American number plates lining the streets.

Buildings in the area have also been renamed to feature on the set. Telephone House has been renamed 'Columbus High School', while the St John Ambulance building, which is Art Deco, has become a building for the US Postal Service. In the era when Ready Player One is set, social and economic problems are widespread as the world is gripped by an energy crisis. The main escape for people living in this world is through a virtual universe called OASIS, which is accessed using a visor and haptic gloves.

The film is set to be released in UK on March 30, 2018, on Good Friday.

West Midlands Police Chief Constable Dave Thompson tweeted: "It's very exciting walking to work in the midst of a film set. #ReadyPlayerOne #Birmingham."
