The Yorkshireman pub on Colton Road has been placed on the market for £449k.

Originally called the Railway Tavern due to its close proximity to Rugeley Trent Valley train station, the name was changed in the early 1970s.

Much of the pub is now set aside for dining, but it is also known for its ale with there being a public area, bar and dining room able to hold up to 60 people.

A patio area can also cater for a further 40 people while there are 20 car parking spots on site.

The pub offers a three bedroom owners accommodation.

A description of the pub states: "While much of the pub is set aside for dining, it is known as much for fine ale as fine cuisine, with casual drinkers welcome in the elegant Oak Room bar where the well-regarded local Blythe Brewery beers have featured for some years.

"Occasional popular themed food nights (eg. Asian, Mexican) are held. The 'quirky' bar and dining room are fitted out and furnished with individual original pieces.

"Throughout the feeling is of a comfortable pair of fireside slippers which is most welcoming to its regular patronage and visitors to local places of historic note."

The pub hit the headlines all the way back in 1990 when it was shut for a week after it was discovered that it had been run for some nine months without actually having a licence.

Staffordshire Police moved to not allow the pub to be granted a licence, but Rugeley magistrates granted the pub its licence and it was allowed to reopen.

The pub was burgled in 1994.

On popular travel site TripAdvisor it is rated as the seventh best restaurant in Rugeley out of 57, with a rating of four and a half out of five.

One reviewer said: "Called for lunch. Our meals were spot on, plentiful and cooked to perfection. Staff were friendly and helpful. Lots of local produce on the menu, even the ales came from Abbots Bromley. Cost was very reasonable and good value. Will visit again soon."

A second reviewer added: "As usual, wonderful service and lovely food. The lunch menu is great value (not been in the evening) and freshly home cooked. Portions are big enough without being so big its a struggle to finish. The belly pork I had at our last visit was melt in the mouth."

The pub has recorded sales of over £500,000 including VAT. The premises license allows openings of 11am till 11pm with actual opening hours self restricted to 12noon until 2.30pm then 5.30pm until 10pm.
