Frolicking in the Californian sunshine, surrounded by models, it seems life's a beach for the One Direction heartthrobs.

And that is exactly where the teenagers found themselves when they filmed the video for debut single What Makes You Beautiful.

Having achieved the highest number of pre-orders ever for a Sony Music act, the single is all set to rocket straight to the top of the charts when it goes on sale on Sunday.

And music mogul Simon Cowell, who mentored the group on the last season of X Factor, insists they will be the biggest thing since Take That.

Seeing the lads work the camera in their video like music industry pros, it is hard to believe that little more than a year ago they were five unknown teenagers with a shared dream of becoming pop stars.

The boys, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson and Wolverhampton's own Liam Payne, spent two weeks in the Sunshine State while filming the video at a beach in Malibu to accompany the catchy debut song.

But the band put in as much hard work as play, according to Liam's father Geoff.

"The lads went over to California in July," he said. "They were over there for two weeks while they shot the video. They spent three days on the beach shooting the scenes. It was tough work.

"The days were 18 hours long. The first three days over there they spent getting to know the girls in their video. They went to a fun fair so when they came to shoot they would feel comfortable with each other."
