Kerry Ellis & Brian May — Anthems

Birmingham Symphony Hall

There were standing ovations for number after number as Queen guitar legend and musical theatre star turned rock chick Kerry Ellis really raised the roof at Birmingham's Symphony Hall.

May was obviously a magnet for die-hard Queen fans but Ellis has attracted a whole new legion of fans of her own after May cast the Wicked actress in the Queen show We Will Rock You.

The collaboration is a triumph with an artistic chemistry between Ellis's stupendous voice and May's distinctive soaring guitar sound. But it was the Queen songs which really got the house rocking and Ellis quickly dispelled any doubts about her ability to step into Freddie Mercury's shoes.

Tie Your Mother Down and We Are the Champions got the audience foot-tapping and swaying along en mass, arms raised, for a sizzling finale.
