The Black Country headquarters of courier firm City Link will close its doors for good at the end of July, it was revealed today.

The Wednesbury Hub, in Midland Road, Darlaston, employs 600 people and jobs will be axed as a result of the closure, although bosses are remaining quiet about how many.

The landmark hub, a national distribution depot off the Black Country Route, will merge with the company's Coventry base.

City Link promised redundancies would be minimised by redeploying staff to smaller depots when the announcement was made in February. Until today the company had only confirmed the depot would close its doors during the summer.

Managing director Stuart Godman said the firm had taken taken a "strategic business decision" to consolidate its two national hubs into a single base in Coventry. Last year, City Link axed a fifth of its 6,500-strong national workforce.
