Lampard, who will consider his future after the tournament, will wear the armband as one of nine changes for England's final Group D tie in Brazil against already-qualified Costa Rica (5pm).

Shrewsbury-born Joe Hart will make way in goal for Ben Foster, who came out of international retirement last February.

With little to play for apart from pride, Hodgson took the unusual step of naming his entire starting line-up the day before kick-off, with Gary Cahill and Daniel Sturridge the only survivors from the Uruguay defeat.

"Ben Foster will play in goal," said Hodgson. "The right-back will be Phil Jones. Gary Cahill will play centre-half alongside Chris Smalling, and Luke Shaw will play left-back. In midfield we will have James Milner, Frank Lampard, Jack Wilshere, Ross Barkley, Adam Lallana. England'sEnglandSturridge will play up front."

Hodgson added: "With a very different team and a lot of players who haven't played so far, I wanted everyone to go home from this tournament – or at least as many as possible - having taken part."
