Talking Tayls with Ian Taylor

Villa favourite Ian Taylor believes it’s time for drastic change with the England team after their disappointing World Cup exit.

It’s time for change – and that goes for the England team and not just the manager.

First and foremost, we need a new manager because Fabio Capello has lost all authority after such a dismal World Cup and Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp is the best man to replace him.

It’s a joke that this country isn’t managed by an Englishman.  Could you imagine Brazil, Argentina or Spain ever being managed by a foreigner? It just wouldn’t happen in a million years.

No, we need someone on board who not only understands what makes English players tick but can actually speak the language! Watching Capello’s interviews has been totally cringe-worthy.

I dread to think how he gets the message across to his players, because he certainly hasn’t managed to get it across to the public. The fact the Football Association want another two weeks to decide whether he’s still the man for the job tells you all you need to know.

Clearly, they’re unconvinced. It was a massive vote of no confidence and is embarrassing for Capello considering only five weeks ago they agreed a deal for him to be boss up to the European Championships in 2012.

Why they did that in the first place is beyond me.

I would pull out all the stops to get Redknapp, because he would know how to relax the players and his passion would rub off onto them.

Not only is he the best there is at man management, tactically he knows his stuff too.

Redknapp would be a balance between the imposing rule of Capello and that of his predecessor Steve McClaren, who seemed to have no control at all.

He’s not wasted any time issuing a ‘come and get me’ plea after his comments yesterday, which is encouraging too.

Otherwise, Roy Hodgson would be a great alternative. He’s proven once again at Fulham he’s a class act and his vast experience of European football would be hugely beneficial. But England look like they’d have to battle it out with Liverpool for him.

Then there’s the players. Only David James in goal and perhaps Ashley Cole came out of the tournament with any credit.

This so-called ‘golden generation’ of players have had enough chances to deliver the truth is they’ve never even come close.

It’s time to freshen things up and, while I don’t expect the team to be torn up completely, there are a few who could have pulled on an England shirt for the last time.

Now 32, Emile Heskey is at an age where it wouldn’t come as a big surprise if he hung up his international boots and, at 31, Matthew Upson is another who should consider calling time.

But, of all of the players, it’s John Terry who should be the most worried.

If you talk the talk then you’ve got to walk the walk – and Terry certainly didn’t do that on Sunday. He was appalling – part of probably the worst England defensive display I’ve ever seen.

He might have kept his place in the team after those controversial comments, but would that of been the case had Rio Ferdinand and Ledley King been fit? Maybe not.

I just can’t see him getting off scott free with such a blatant breaking of the ranks, so it will be interesting to see if he keeps his place in the squad.

Fresh blood has to come in and I’d like to see the likes of Adam Johnson, Michael Dawson, Tom Huddlestone, goalkeeper Joe Hart and James Milner all become first-team regulars for the Euro 2012 qualifying campaign.

It’s time for this country to eat some humble pie – because we’re very back to square one.

Even if England win every one their Euro qualifiers 6:0, no fan or player will have any faith that Capello would have the faintest idea what to do when it comes to the actual Finals.

Sorry Tayl’s but you’ve most definitely got this one wrong. Redknapp for England! You’ve got to be joking! I would put Hope Powell in charge before I’d consider Redknapp.

Tayl’s, you talk about things like discipline. I remember last season when Redknapp warned his players about drinking. Next night, 4 of his players are photographed out on the **** and dancing on tables! Then there was Bentleys barrel of cold water at Man City! Could you imagine someone like Ferguson, Busby, Shankley or Clough allowing that to happen?

Then Tayl’s, you then contradict yourself by saying that he would relax players, while at the same time instilling his passion into them??? It’s the passion that’s missing from the likes of Terry, Ferdinand, Cole, Johnson, Lampard, Milner, Rooney and Heskey. That lot actually LOSE their passion when pulling on an England shirt.

I don’t think Redknapp has got the bottle for the job either. Remember his little hissy-fit at Villa Park 2 years ago, when Villa fans ‘crime’ was to sing about him being arrested! What would he be like if he received just half of the abuse that Taylor and McLaren got???

Sorry Tayl’s, but Redknapp is most definitely NOT the man for the job! If I were the FA, I would put a young interim manager/coach in place for 2 years leading up to the European championships, maybe a Pearce or a Southgate. Around that time, a certain Scottish gentleman should be available, free from his current club commitments. He could then oversee a transition period leading up to the next World Cup and maybe beyond with the interim coach under his wing! Forget the fact he is Scottish! He would come if the money was right! And if Capello is worth £6 million, Mr F is worth double that! He knows our players, our mentality and our game better than anybody, especially Capello!

Bilston Villain, having a foreign manager who cant speak english is bad enough but having a scottish man in charge is unthinkable! Yes Ferguson (who will be 100% retiring when his time with United ends) knows our players but no way would he help England, he’s never helped the English team and doesnt even like us (like most scots).

We need an English manager and Redknapps the best of the bunch, he got Tottenham into the top 4, thats the achievement that makes him best qualified, he also knows all the players and with being passionate about england he could be a great motivator
