Wolves legend Steve Bull today backed Fabio Capello for a second crack at England glory despite the miserable World Cup failure in South Africa.

Bully believes Capello got it wrong tactically with the so-called ‘golden generation’, but reckons the Italian coach has done enough to carry on with the Three Lions.

“You can’t judge him over four games,” said Bull, who won 13 caps and played in Italia ’90 when England reached the semi-finals.

“He’s a top manager and a world class coach with all the medals but at the same time you can still get it wrong. The players gave it their best shot, but some of them played in the wrong positions.

“You can’t play Steven Gerrard on the left wing — he should have played behind Wayne Rooney and that way we would have got the best out of him.

“I think we should have bombarded the midfield because we kept being caught out with the third man running — two of the goals came from when Gareth Barry tripped over the ball on the edge of their box.

“We should have played Joe Cole on the left with Barry, Gerrard and Frank Lampard in the middle and James Milner on the right side.

“We probably played well for about 45 minutes over the four games.

“Capello’s probably wondering why it didn’t click, but you have to give him a second chance. It’s like when Graham Taylor came to Wolves; he tried to sell me but I always say we should have given him a second season because he would have taken us up if we’d have stuck with him.

“I don’t know whether there was disruption in the camp but there were rumours and he has to explain what went wrong.”

As a former striker, Bully was puzzled at Wayne Rooney’s subdued efforts in South Africa.

“You could tell from the first game Rooney spat his dummy out,” he said.

“He never looks happy anyway but he’s paid to do a job and that’s what he should have done.

“We didn’t play to his strengths like Manchester United do — he likes to pick the ball up in deep areas but we didn’t get the ball to him enough.”

The Molineux idol also backed calls for goalline technology after Frank Lampard’s goal that never was.

“Let’s have a fourth official on the goal-lines — it wasn’t a hard shot and it was a few feet over,” he said.
