England slump out of World Cup to Germany
Sunday 27th June 2010, 5:52PM BST.
England were knocked out of the World Cup with a 4-1 defeat to Germany in the second round at the Free State Stadium in South Africa.
A largely one-sided encounter saw Germany race to a 2-0 lead, with only saves from David James keeping the score respectable.
Matthew Upson, who had an otherwise torrid match, scored a header late on in the first half shortly before a Frank Lampard goal was wrongly adjudged not to have crossed the line in one of the biggest refereeing World Cup clangers of all-time.
England pushed for an equaliser in the second half but were caught twice on the break with Thomas Muller getting both.
An abject finals campaign under Fabio Capello was brought to a humiliating halt, despite the support of thousands of England fans spending large sums to watch their side.
Germany maintain their record of making the quarter finals in every World Cup appearance since 1938.
