Former England star Cyrille Regis expects an inquest into England’s “imploding” World Cup campaign – regardless of this afternoon’s result.
After a disappointing draw against USA and shock stalemate against Algeria, England face Slovenia in Port Elizabeth this afternoon knowing only a victory will send them into the last 16.
The Three Lions’ preparations have been overshadowed by the storm surrounding John Terry’s controversial comments and they are certain to face a hostile backlash from the press and public should they fail.
Regis believes coach Fabio Capello must take his share of the blame and, while he expects a win later today, says that would only paper over the cracks.
The Albion great, capped five times by England, said: “I hope they can do it. I expect it to be one or two nil. I think they will bundle their way past.
“But I think no matter how far we go there will be a big inquiry by the FA into what’s gone on.
“England have been poor since the Mexico and Japan games so it’s nothing new. You want to see a little more, especially against Algeria. The boys are bereft of confidence,
“Capello is the manager. He’s got to sort out what’s been going wrong. You can’t just say it’s the players. What’s wrong with the players then?
“He’s changed nothing. It’s slowly imploding. He has to find out what’s the problem. You have to fix it.
“These are the same players who were fantastic in the qualifying round. You don’t become bad players over-night unless something is wrong.”
And fellow Midland footballing great Morley is also tipping Capello’s boys to avert disaster.
The Villa legend, capped six times by England, said: “I really expect them to get a result. There’ll be a lot of nerves in the first 20 minutes but we have enough good players to see us through.
“All of the top teams are finding it very hard. It isn’t just England.”
