Mark Griffiths’ World Cup diary

The two marks get to grips with an Algerian fan on Table Mountain

After  travelling 28 hours we finally arrived at Cape Town airport at 6pm local time on the day before the England v Algeria game, writes Wolves fan Mark Griffiths.

There was a ticket collection point in the airport that was very easy to use and had very helpful staff on hand to help out were there any problems. It was a great idea to collect tickets on arrival as it avoided tickets been circulated in advance weeks before the tournament and gave ticket touts less time to get their hands on them.

The bus journey into the centre of Cape Town was inexpensive and very well organized and was occupied by an armed guard that proved to be totally unnecessary and the locals on the bus were excited and interested to talk to us about our trip to Cape Town.

The bus dropped us off at our centrally located hotel and after checking in we then went out into town to watch France v Mexico and then drank, sang and danced with fellow England fans into the early hours. It was a fantastic atmosphere with fans from many countries joining in the celebrations although the majority were obviously English. We met up with many Midlands fans  with the majority being Wolves and  Villa fans.

The following morning we went up Table Mountain where once again we came across Wolves fans  and we also met an Algerian fan who was quite happy to have his photo taken with us while we jokingly put our hands round his neck in protest at the vuvuzela and then made our way to the V&A Waterfront for a pre match beer that was totally awash with thousands upon thousands of England fans.

The atmosphere was electric and it was fantastic to see so many flags of St George hanging all round the waterfront. We met up with Steve Kirby a fellow Wolves season ticket holder in a bar at the waterfront.

The support for the team in the stadium was outstanding and it is just a pity the team let us down badly.

The noise of the vuvuzelas was not as bad as I expected and made a positive impact to the atmosphere at corners and free kicks. Throughout the rest of the game I am pleased to say that the England fans out sung the drone of this plastic trumpet although it may not have come across like this on TV.

I would not like the vuvuzela to be part of the English game but if it is part of the South African Culture and the World Cup is in their country then I guess we had to accept it however as mentioned I believe our fans did our best to drown them out.

What I did find strange was that bottles of beer were allowed to be drunk while in your seat watching the game. Now I am not opposed to this and in fact very much in favour of it but at all England FIFA qualifying games there is no beer allowed on sale at anytime in the stadium because of FIFA rules so to let beer be drunk in view of the game where opposing fans were also sat I found rather hypocritical to say the least.

Despite the result England fans carried on the party into the early hours and once again the atmosphere was fantastic . We ended our World Cup experience on Saturday morning with a trip to Robben Island and had the fortune of a free taxi ride to the marina with some English journalists who were staying at our hotel.

Overall the experience was amazing, the atmosphere brilliant and the locals could not be more helpful. There was no sign of danger and we were never in fear of anything. The transport was well organized as was everything else, however as with all England matches abroad the organization getting into the stadium was poor and it seems it is only here in England that entrance into a stadium can be plain sailing.
