Frosty scene captured on phone

As Anthony Ridge left his house in the Black Country for the morning, he was not in the best of moods.

Trouble with his car meant he was on the way to the garage, hoping for the best.

But his demeanour soon improved when he glanced across the fields opposite his home in Sedgley.

He was greeted by a glorious sunrise poking through the leafless trees, creeping over the frost-hardened fields.

It was an opportunity the keen snapper was not about to let pass without getting a picture.

Since retiring from his job as an Environmental Health consultant, where he would advise hotels at home and abroad on safety procedures, the 69-year-old grandfather has found himself with a camera in his hand more often. But on this chilly morning, the perfect picture found him – rather than the other way around – meaning he had to improvise.

Mr Ridge said: "I went out that morning without any of my best cameras.

"I use a Fuji Bridge camera and have just bought a Canon, which I am getting used to.

"But I thought 'I have to get a picture of that', so I took my mobile phone out of my pocket and it turned out very well.

"I suppose the moral is if you catch it well it doesn't matter what sort of camera it is," he said.

Mr Ridge, of Wilton Close, liked it so much he decided to submit it to the Express & Star's Star Witness, and plans to take many more.

"We're quite fortunate that we live on the hill in Sedgley and you can see towards Birmingham, the Birmingham and Baggies grounds, it's a hell of a view," he said.

"I used to take photos of buildings in my job and since I've retired I've grown to like it.

"I've usually got a camera with me when I go for walks and see if I can find something interesting," he added.
