But it wasn't all animal magic when Halloween pictures poured in from our readers: some were spooky, others tricky - and all were a real treat.

Take the fabulous four mutts who obediently allowed owner Gina Stokes to get them in the Halloween spirit.

Adorned in white sheets and holding pumpkins, the quartet were more than happy to pose.

Gina, aged 29 and from Pattingham, said: "I like to think they are more cute than scary. They look like they are going out trick or treating.

"We often dress them up for a bit of fun. They were not bothered by the sheets, they just sat there thinking 'oh no she's doing something else with us.'

"I have done obedience training with them in the past and they know how to stay still and hold something, so it worked perfectly."

Another who dressed for the occasion was six-year-old Mia McLoughlin from Codsall who managed to be both cute and scary when donning the garb of a Victorian ghost.

Spooky six year old Mia McLoughlin from Codsall is a Halloween horror

The Birches First School pupil had mum Laura to thank for the alarming make-up and costume. Her proud dad Ryan, a 32-year-old business manager from Codsall, explained: "Mia loves dressing up and thoroughly enjoys Halloween so this was the perfect mix. She wanted to have a scary outfit for a birthday party we went to last weekend.

"So Laura put her thinking cap on and came up with this. She did all the make up and adapted a costume Mia had worn for a Victorian day at school. It went down really well.

"Mia does not scare easily and has been counting down the days to the proper Halloween. No doubt she will come up with her own trick and frighten the life out of mum and dad."

Eye-catching pumpkins will be on show in thousands homes in the area but few will be as striking as that produced by Helen Pitt.

A eye catching ET pumpkin from Helen Pitt of Dudley

The 36-year-old administrator and mother of one from Milking Bank, Dudley spent two hours crafting this eerie ET.

She revealed: "I have been doing this kind of thing for the past four years. It started when I was pregnant with my son Joseph who is now aged two. I suppose I was going through a mumsy phase but really got hooked on the idea.

"The first year I designed a tiger, then it was a witch and last year I chose a vampire. I picked ET this time because it was an iconic character when I was growing up and still means something to the youngsters of today. I love putting the pumpkin on show for the trick and treaters and hear the comments of the children when they see it."

She uses an ordinary knife for most of the work but turns to a small screwdriver for the intricate bits and insisted: "There is no great secret. I just stood in my kitchen on my own for a couple of hours. I am very pleased with the result and will be sad when the time comes to dump it in the bin - but there is always next year to look forward to."
