Stoke City 0 Wolves 2 - Report and pictures

Wolves produced a stunning cup upset to beat Stoke City 2-0 at the bet365 Stadium.

Helder Costa put them into a first half lead they fully merited.

The Premier League Potters - who showed only four changes from their last league game - came on strong in the second half but Carl Ikeme made a number of fine saves to protect Wolves' lead.

And then with 11 minutes to go Matt Doherty buried a 20-yard free kick to send 4,600 fans into delirium - and Wolves into the fourth round.

And they say people don't care about the FA Cup anymore.

Try telling that to 4,600 Wolves supporters who enjoyed one of their best away days for many a year.

Or try telling it to Paul Lambert, or to the 14 Wolves heroes who produced a performance and result to remember for a very long time.

Wolves took on a Premier League team - and beat them comfortably. They took on Shaqiri, Bojan, Crouch, Arnautovic and the rest. And a 2-0 win didn't flatter them.

To a man Wolves were superb. They could have scored twice in the first eight minutes. They created several good chances, they took their goals well and defended manfully at the back, none more so than Carl Ikeme who made four exceptional saves in a 12-minute spell in the second half, Stoke's best period of the match by far.

Wolves made more changes than Stoke (six to the Potters' four) and even fielded a 16-year-old for 30 minutes with Morgan Gibbs-White the latest young cab off the Compton Park rank.

He was as composed as the imperious 33-year-old Mike Williamson, who came in after 13 months out injured and was the best player on the pitch.

Alongside him Kortney Hause, Dominic Iorfa and Matt Doherty barely put a foot wrong. A midfield two of George Saville and Lee Evans kept things solid. And a front four looked threatening all game.

And their fans lapped up every second. There were worries that Lambert would field a weakened team and Wolves would be thrashed. Well, they fielded a 'weakened team' and Wolves won with something to spare.

Under Lambert's tutelage, and yes it's early days, you feel there might be a few more days like this in the near future.

Lambert made six changes from the team that drew 0-0 at Sheffield Wednesday on Monday.

In came Williamson for his long awaited comeback, while the returning Lee Evans made his first appearance since August.

Stoke selected a side, as dubbed by one hack in the press box, akin to the Harlem Globetrotters, with Xherdan Shaqiri, Bojan, Ibrahim Afellay and record signing Giannelli Imbula all brought in to an XI that also featured Marko Arnautovoc and Peter Crouch.

However any fears that Wolves would be blown away by the hugely talented hosts were dispelled within minutes - and then some.

Lambert's team looked threatening on the counter attack from the word go and created two good chances inside the first eight minutes, both sent just wide by Jon Dadi Bodvarsson.

They were playing with no fear, and with no little confidence.

Evans and George Saville were keeping things tidy and simple in midfield and the front four of Helder Costa, Bright Enobakhare, Joe Mason and Bodvarrson were menacing, particularly Costa, whose goal gave Wolves a thoroughly deserved lead just before the half hour.

It was his eighth of the season. Coupled with six assists, he has undoubtedly been Wolves star turn. Almost priceless, you might say, and sadly Wolves will almost certainly be unable to afford him next summer.

Stoke improved as the first half wore on but a poor Crouch volley from close range was all they could muster, with captain Carl Ikeme having not a save to make.

Brilliantly backed by 4,600 boisterous away fans who sold out the whole stand behind Ikeme's goal, it was the perfect first half performance, with the imperious Williamson not putting a foot wrong and constantly encouraging and organising the back four.

Mark Hughes inevitably made half time changes. Joe Allen and Charlie Adam came on for Bojan and Imbula and Stoke came racing out of the traps, forcing a free kick on the edge of the box straight away which hit the wall.

And that set the tone for the rest of the half.

Wolves defended deeper and their tackles became more and more last-ditch, while Ikeme was called on far more regularly.

The big keeper made four stunning saves including a couple right out of the 'worldie' bracket. Crouch (twice), Afellay and Allen were all denied in the space of 12 minutes in which Stoke threw the kitchen sink at Wolves.

Ikeme was oustanding. So too were Hause and Doherty who each made a couple of tenacious blocks.

Everyone was throwing their body at the ball. And Wolves' admirable defending during that onslaught proved to be the game's key period - because with 11 minutes to go they doubled their lead and sealed a wonderful victory.

No one expected Irishman Doherty to be the one to strike a 20-yard free kick after Bodvarsson was fouled, but he put Shaqiri, Bojan and the rest to shame with a thunderous hit which beat Grant and sent the 4,600 behind that goal into absolute ecstasy.

They sang their hearts out for the final 11 minutes, in which Wolves continued to look the more likely goalscorers on the counter.

But they had to settle for 2-0! A magnificent performance and result. Lambert could be onto something very good here.

Key moments

4 - Helder Costa races down the right and plays inside for Jon Dadi Bodvarsson whose 15-yard shot whistles past the far post.

8 - Bodvarsson beats his man to the ball on halfway and hares forward before cutting inside and drilling, again, just wide of the far post. It's a great start from Wolves.

13 - Lee Evans curls a 20-yard free kick goalwards and Lee Grant makes a solid save low down to his left.

29 - GOAL - Matt Doherty floats the ball to the right of the box - Costa controls it, cuts inside and beats Grant at his near post with a vicious low shot to give Wolves a deserved lead.

42 - Big chance for Stoke. Marko Arnautovic's superb cross is met by Peter Crouch on the volley but he blazes over from just six yards. A big let off.

61 - An absolutely wonderful save from Carl Ikeme who blocks Arnautovic's rocket shot from 15 yards.

67 - Ibrahim Afellay lets fly from range and Ikeme pushes wide with another great block.

70 - The ball sits up for Crouch and Ikeme again makes a wonderful save to palm wide.

73 - And now Joe Allen tries his luck from range - it's goalbound until Ikeme tips over the bar. Four brilliant saves in 12 minutes.

79 - GOAL - Bodvarsson is hauled down on the edge of the box. Up steps Doherty to send a brilliant free kick past Grant from 20 yards.

The special one

In my eyes Williamson playing the full 90 is just as good as the result! The only thing that leaves is... mr lambert please drop batth and not stearman or even pair up Williamson with hause! Sorry Danny your time has got to be up! Great result hopefully we can take this performance into the league.

old golds worth more

Totally agree, a clean sheet against a premiership team on their own turf was great, but to get the win as well was even greater, and with no Batth, which tells its own story. Sorry Danny but your time is up, please hand your Captains arm band over to Mr Williamson (where are his detractors now?) as well. Okay one swallow doesn't make a summer, but it's a far brighter outlook then it has been of late, and if PL drops MW in favour of Danny boy, then the crowd may well let PL know their feelings about that in no uncertain terms. Dropping Iorfa seems to have done him a bit of good as well judging by his display. So once more, well done boys, and the cats backside is safe this weekend to boot (pun fully intended)!

Cradley Wolf

Come on Lambert keep the same team for the Villa game and we'll be flying !!!

Jesus! A fantastic win & STILL people want to have a go at one of our own!

Cradley Wolf

Whjat would the result of been if capatain calamity Batth would of been playing ?

Answers on a postage stamp !!!

spot on cradley wolf

That's an utterly ridiculous comment Cradley Wolf. Much like the ones being spouted yesterday about the 'possible changes' to the 'first team' showing no respect to the 'fans!' Well the changes were made & guess what?, we turned over the Premier league side & played with style, guts & determination all round! Batth's form, much like the team itself, has been up & down, but to pick him out as some kind of reason for the defensive performance is pathetic! Hause was magnificent today but his form too has been patchy. Williamson was majestic but the club was urged to 'get rid' by many because of his injury. And as I recall, one of our better defensive performances was last weeks display against Sheff Wed................which Batth played in!

Just try enjoying the result without being negative about someone who wasn't even playing.

We had a clean sheet at Sheffield Wednesday, in what was a great performance. Guess what? Danny Batth was outstanding in that performance. I hate it when supposed supporters pick on our own players. That is a major part of why most of our good performances are away from Molyneux. Too many negative people who love to boo our own at the slightest mistake. Even worse are those that write negative drivel on here without even attending the games, relying on either WM or E&S journalists reports in order to then trot out their bile.

Remember, SUPPORTERS Support.

I didn't see any way we could beat Stoke, but am absolutely thrilled to have been proven wrong. Just be pleased that we won, and forget your petty little dislike for individuals. There always seems to be someone being picked on at the Wolves. I remember when it was Dave Edwards, who can currently do no wrong. If we show support to our players, they will respond.

Agree totally.

go to the top of the class young man

Brilliant, you've used six whole words to complete a sentance that slags off the wolves captain... Fab result, entirely unexpected.

chris h

Wolvereeeen I'll join you, if I may. Two clean sheets in two previous away games in the league, both with Danny Batth playing his part.

Cradley Wolf

Wolvereeeen and Cornish wipe the crap out of your eyes and see him for what he is

again spot on cradley wolf

Cradley Wolf

Isn't it good that we've got Williamson back to steady the ship or are you saying Batth is a better player than him ?????

You talk out your backside at the best of times so it seems there's to be no change in this new year is there !!!

The Flying Winger

C W, The FA Cup is a little different to the pressures of playing week in week out, Batth has been playing in a changing defence for weeks now he is alongside Stearman he is not covering other positions.

Some are calling for the same defence for next match on this one performance, sometimes I despair.

Not Convinced

cradley nothing personal but I cant help myself from quoting one of your previous recent posts :

' there is no way in hell that this lot will beat stoke '

I myself doubted if mike williamson would cope with crouch on his return - I was wrong on this . it appears that w made a very good return to the side and marshalled young kortney to play one of his best ever games for wolves ,

and for me I am pleased for saville since I still rate him .

old golds worth more

Sorry TFW, but I have to disagree with you on your last sentence. Who would you drop from the defence after that display? They averaged 9/10 according to E & S's ratings (and that was away to a Premiership side don't forget), so would fully expect to be playing in the next match, otherwise what kind of message would that be sending to them if some got dropped? Good displays should be rewarded, just like poor displays end up with the culprits (usually) being dropped. These Guys have seized their chance, and deserve to continue to be selected.

No crap in my eyes, great result, great performance, 6 words into the first comment and 4 are used to show#t on the wolves captain who wasn't on the pitch. Don't you usually slag stearman off by this point anyway?

Talk about 'crap' -

Laughable negative comments already.

Cradley Wolf

Tell me 5 good points about Danny Batth and why he should be in the team (If you can) !!

Cradley Wolf

Maybe Wolvereeeen you should take a look on Twitter and see what fans are saying

about your favourite player missing today's game.

Sir Billy Quiet

Cradley Wolf anyone who uses a Wolves win to slag off a player should hang their heads - supporter? ask the 4600 that actually went if they care.........

The Flying Winger

C W, twitter if that's your bench mark for knowledgable fans, who I reckon most didn't go then again I despair

Cradley Wolf

SBQ I was there were you ????????

Sir Billy Quiet

Just enjoy the win, without slagging off our players - moaning Muppets.

A great day out to be a Wolves fan.

DB, needs a lengthy rest from the first team.

Those that encourage and call for players that underachieve are supporters that prevent the club from progressing.....

Cradley Wolf

EXACTLY !!! very well said Rampton...

Same team v the villa,, outstanding result,, and. A fantastic. away support,,, respect to one and all!!

I've been watching Wolves for over 40 years. I predicted a heavy defeat today and that Wolves would be 'lucky to get nil'. Shows how much I know about the game. Fantastic result and I feel so happy for the fans that went to the game. I was concerned that we wouldn't take the FA Cup seriously and I am so happy to be proved wrong. My humble pie has never tasted so good. The beers will certainly be flowing tonight. Here's to a long cup run and dreams of a Wembley Final !

We Are Wolves !!

Waiting to hear from the Lambert Doubters ....Great Team Effort Williamson hopefully stays fit

Followed it on the net and online. What a fantiastic result. Good to see Evans and Williamson back.

Brilliant and all credit to Lambert. Was worried initially about the inclusion of the two young lads at the back but Hause was excellent today, Iorfa still not worth a place for me but Williamson showed just how much a player of his quality and experience has been missing.

Costa ? too good for us tbh but fantastic while it lasts.

Farmer Ted

January 7, 2017 1:34 pm

This guy Lambert seems to have an over inflated belief in himself and what he has achieved so far. For me he is just another KJ

Tim Buzaglo

Shut up you tart

He has only been at Wolves for 5 minutes and look what he has inherited

Paul Lambert is young and hungry and at Wolves which is a good fit

Have a beer a chill mate

I think your missing the point he's making Tim....

spot on mate

Too, too hilarious. I doubt that even if F-Ted has added the quote marks you'd have got his point either.

bintheredunit: are you aware of how pitiful your comments are? Just trying to help..

Nippy Lobo

Belief in yourself is a necessary condition of success in pro sports! It's essential.

Cradley Wolf

Evening Ted,

What a great performance today, Williamson back in the team steadies the ship marshalling the young uns should be made team captain. Hopefully now he's back it will be onwards and upwards starting next Saturday at the Vile..

What's it taste like Cradley? Yes i'm talking about humble pie!! your previous comments we will never beat Stoke with this lot !! followed by "What a great performance today" I would suggest before stating Steve Bull's comments are stupid that you engage brain before opening mouth and putting your thoughts in writing !!

I stand by what I said Ted, but today he and the players got it right, just as KJ did on occasion and on those days he too had the same response as my post above. Credit where and ONLY where it is due. Sadly that was a rare event with KJ and I suspect will prove to be the same with Lambert.

Today wasn't a day to air these views or score points, it was a day for praise. Come back to me when this is the norm and you will get my heart felt apologies just as I offered for when Jackett delivered success. It never happened then nor imo will it happen under PL.

He done good today.

We had a day similar to this under Walter ... remember Newcastle ?

'...when you look at it, life's a piece of shXt... dum, dee-dum, dee-dum-dee-dum-dee-dumb' eh?

Don't worry, we'll lose one sooner or - if you are unlucky - later, and then everyone will be able to unleash the usual vitriol at their favourite-hate players... Normal service to be resumed for so many online Wolves fans!

Absolutely fantastic result, well done to everyone involved. Now let's smash Villa next week !!

The special one

Yeah i like that utw1877 and let's stuff them with Williamson as our captain!!

Pete in Asia

Great. Onwards and upwards. Costa must stay.

A wonderful result and I have to admit I could not see it coming, especially when I saw the team changes. I'm being honest. Although, in my defence, on an earlier thread I did state that as the FA Cup often throws up shock results, why shouldn't one of them be ours. And so it has come to pass. Thrilled with the result and thrilled for the travelling fans. Well done PL; well done lads - you've done yourselves, and us, proud.

superbe result. An experienced head at the back, directing the younger lads, what we have been lacking for a while. They will benefit from Williamsons experience and guidance. Hope he keeps the same team.

Fantastic! Did not expect this result, especially after the performance against QPR. If only Wolves could play this well at Molineux. Great win.

Rule Bloody Britannia !!

Well Rule Bet365 really, but that sounds silly.

Wolves Weaker Squad 2 - Stoke Full Squad n0where.

It's a good job we didn't play our strong team!

Crouch - Not good enough for us.

Danny and Stears might not get their places back.

I'm off out to celebrate the win!!

A sing-song down our local won't do justice to the 4600 lucky Wolves fans who can say forever,

"I Was There"

Pride in a local derby restored at last.

Well done everyone!

What a night that was - "Doin' the Lambert Walk"!

Anytime down old gold way,

Any Sat'day on match day,

You'll find us all doin' the Lambert walk.

When we get down Wembley way,

How the mighty Wolves will play,

You'll find us all doin' the Lambert walk.

Every little Lambert gal,

Vicky, Sue, and SheWolf's pal,

You'll find 'em all doin' the Lambert walk.

And every little Lambert lad,

From little sons to great gran'dad,

You'll hear us all singin' the Lambert walk.

...ooh, me 'ead, where's the paracetamol?

You are BRILL.

Haven't enjoyed such a good knees-up in years, lovely girl.

If you want another hilariously funny moment this afternoon, take a look at magical Merse, the football "expert" and his three hot tips to win the FA Cup this year - Everton, Bournemouth and...Stoke.

I haven't had such a fun time as this, since Bully told me Eldervo was an old West Brom fan, (only kidding Eldo), I know you saw the error of your ways at the age of 11. I forgave you a long time ago.

Let's all enjoy our moment. It might be the only one we have to celebrate this season, particularly, if Paul Merson ever tips us to win the FA cup.

Take care guys.

I'm a Lambert gal....

Fantastic result so proud of the youngersters ,one I've never heard and only 16.Good on you Paul Lambert.

Sue it's a lovely feeling to see youngsters coming through and doing well. Credit to Lambert for giving them the chance. Great win but always disgruntled comments from some. I despair.

I despair too but let's forget them and enjoy the wonderful result.

Cradley Wolf

It's just such a pity that you and Olly The Cat are closet Baggies fans !!! you post on their threads apologising for wolves fans who give them stick yet you say nothing about their posts on our threads and as for Olly the Cat well what can I say, he congratulates them and even tells them "Secure a place in Europe next season" some Wolves fan !!!

Cradley. I am not a Baggie fan, Wolves fan for over 60 years. Is it a crime to speak to opposing fans, after all their club is in a better state than ours at the moment. You think because you are a ?Wolves fan it gives you the right to spout inanities to decent people. Also your treatment of Danny is despicable. Is that what true Wolves fans do berate and belittle their players? Think you need to grow up.

I post on the baggies site too, mate, when I can find the time.

I also count quite a few of them as mates, (only in correspondence, we have never met), but they know their football, and have opinions worth reading.

My respect for them is total. We josh each other mercilessly, because we will always be ultra competitors where our teams are concerned, but on a football supporter and forum level - utter respect.

Well said Shewolf. He, Cradley, is obviously the type of guy that only reads what he wants to read. He obviously has never seen mine, yours and others responses to the likes of Sourstu, Gilbert's sock bloke and the infamous Hat man et al when they overwhelm this site.

We can well do without "supporters" like him as Albion can do without. those I have mentioned above.

I have a feeling he actually sits with one leg either side of the fence and you must know what that does to us fellas...!

Cradley Wolf

66 years a supporter but i wouldn't call them from down the road decent at all !!!

Was it decent of them to litter our beloved Molineux with their Tesco bags or have you forgotten that !!!!

So they are in a league above us so what !!! Does that make them a better club than ours ?

What history have they got compared to ours !!!

They think they are so bloody high and mighty and you go on their threads apologising for Wolves supporters posting on their threads with a bit of banter you really are laughable, how about them posting their crap on our threads do you get any of them Sandwell clowns apologising NO !!! Then most of all you get Olly The Cat telling them to secure a place in Europe lol that'll be the day has he seen them pink piggies flying above the POORTHORNS!!!

As for my favourite player he should of been dropped months ago I am fed up to the back teeth of having to explain to those who think the sun shines out of his backside why I don't like him, he is about as fast as a knackered old cart hoss, he can't tackle, he gives away stupid free kicks in dangerous areas, he can't pass, he's been a liability in most games, yes admittedly he has had some good games BUT more often than not he has cost us games that is why I have a go and as with every other Wolves fan who can see this we are allowed to voice our opinions, other supporters may not like what is written but as I keep telling FT we do have what is called freedom of speech in this country.

Cradley of course there is freedom of speech, but there is also people who deserve to be respected. Just because they support another club doesn't mean we have to throw bile at them. So you have supported Wolves for 66 years you are about the same age as myself, so surely you remember the good times when we all stood together and had banter. You say what you say is banter, I disagree, I call it aggressive and intimidating. If that's what you want to do that's your choice, but I don't see why others posters have to read it.

Mountain Wolf

Listened on Signal 107 and alternated between being on the edge of my seat and pacing the kitchen floor. Well done lads - and especially well done to the travelling supporters whose presence was heard throughout the game.

The Flying Winger

Blimey we're in the 4th round of the FA Cup, haven't been able to say that much over the last few years.

I am delighted for the travelling fans who turn up to our games and have seen a performance that they will remember for a long time.

Full marks to Lambert I haven't understood why some have been on his case already, it is obvious to most that a difference is happening which will turn into results, 90 mins of effort not said that much for a long time, he also put out a good side Inc the players who are regulars and didn't go for defence late in the game.

Williamson made a difference also but the hero was Ikeme who I don't think has been on top of his game recently but today was superb.

Many knock Cup games I have never understood why it can do so much for a team, manager and fans confidence which I'm sure it has done for us today.

What a game we should have against Villa and a Full House..

Top draw result, I did say we didn't need to sign a centre half ONLY if Williamson came back and came back playing as well as we know he can and he answered that and then some, Oh what a bit of experience gives you!

Only one moan from me and its a moan that happens every week since his return, Dicko cant hit a barn door, I'd sell him, Same can be said for Bodvarsson but I'd stick with Dadi as He has far more to his game!

Great result though Wolves, just transfer this result to the league please and MAYBE we could go on a run and who knows!

Nippy Lobo

There will be hick-ups, but this team is going to go places under Paul Lambert. Well done, the lads. Superb!

I did say on my post on Steve Bull's article this morning 2-1 to the Wolves. Another Lego brick in place towards our Eiffel Tower! Can we give another run-out to Williamson in the Checkatrade in readiness for the Villa? PL now has two different line-ups (v Sheff Wed and Stoke) to pick from for the Villa. My only worry is that we play with such fluency as a counter-attacking side away from home but we have to crack it at Molineux. Can't wait for the Cup draw!

Williamson needs recovery time not another game this week!!

Great result and what a shock, Williamson great game, hope he can keep fit and give him the arm band he was talking and kept Hause in check, They are the CB's for the rest of the season and a good run together Hause will learn a lot.

Nice to see another Babie being given a chance, Lets hope this can turn our season.

Bruce, Arouca, Trinidad

Must be our first good cup result for 15 years! Come on lads transfer some of this away form to Molineux and up we go!

Superb lads. I really doubted we would get a result today. Evidently well worth our win. So glad to be proved wrong..

chris h

As Leonard Cohen would say 'We're on the march with Lambert's Army, we're all off to Wembley, we'll really shake them up, when we win the FA Cup, 'cos Wanderers are the greatest football team'. The oldies are always the best.

Well said Kev on Radio WM, perfectly illustrating what it all means.

Excellent! Fantastic result from a strong Stoke side too. Maybe things are changing for the better... could people be (myself included sometimes) be too critical of Wolves? They showed up today and just wish I could have been there! Next draw at home please and hopefully another premiership club... WBA perhaps......? oh wait :)

Costa is too good to play in championship... pay whatever it takes to keep him in the summer but i doubt we can keep hold of him especially after today. Premiership clubs would and should be looking at him unfortunately.

I feel for Dicko he's desperate to score.

Well done, cant wait for Villa now!

I expect a queue of 'supporters' lining up to apologise to the manager & 'players that aren't good enough' to be in the 'first team!'

Brave by Lambert to start with, bearing in mind the stick many were waiting to hurl at him. Six changes, Williamson's first start back from injury & topped off with a debut for a 16yr old kid! All added up to a deserved victory over the Premier League opposition.

Well done to all concerned, & a special mention for all those supporters who went to support the matter who wears it!

West Park

Well done Wolves..fantastic support from the travelling masses..

Farmer Ted

We're in the bag for the fourth round draw, pity we can't draw the Albion! So pleased for Williamson after such a long break, he made a lot of difference and Hause alongside was outstanding. Good too to see Evans play so well in midfield, so many on here have written him off, but this lad has more to offer Wolves. Brave of Lambert to put Morgan-Gibbs on with a full 30 minutes to go and only 1-0 at the time and he didn't let anybody down. If Spurs can give Bruce's boys a good thrashing tomorrow we should be in a strong position to take three points next week.

Anything to say, you Lambert knockers...we know who you are!

Thank goodness someone on here can identify what Evans can give us. Well said Sir!

I've never doubted him nor has northern wolves...

re the Lambert question - Do ANY of us know what he might, or might not, bring? The actual point should be that we need to give our manager (one chosen after some consideration, as opposed to Walter, who was chucked up one day, for the sake of making immediate change) time to prove himself. Perhaps the haters (of virtually everything, even a glorious cup win) might even grant Lambert the opportunity to prove them right, or wrong, and even time enough to learn the names of his extensive squad. Mind you, he's clearly got to know most already, after all, how many - apart from Albrightondek - even knew what a Gibbs-White was? He's a genuine Millennial it seems. Next time we lose - and yes, it could be very soon - the crazed Caligula's will be back in full force screaming 'I TOLD you, IDIOTS!!! (fill in virtually every players name here) is sh£t and anyone who doesn't agree with MEEEEEE is a MORON!!! If you EVER defend ANY player against MY insults you must LOVE THAT PLAYER. Grrraaahhhhhhh'.

The heroes of today are next weeks sacrificial lambs, to the slaughtered.

So it goes in the minds of those unable to see shades other than black and white, or those for whom one players great performance is an excuse to slag off another player who isn't in the team today.

I'm actually amazed that no one appears to have laid into the reputation of Jack Price today... because we won and he wasn't on the pitch.

Lambert is proving his worth, long may it continue (PS i don't love him, but he is currently my favourite manager - because he is manager of MY team. Wolves).

Well that told them, great post I'm also amazed no one's mentioned Jack Price (one in particular) saying it's because he didn't play we won.

I agree with Sue. Maybe I misjudged you a few days ago. Maybe you just needed to get into your stride. You are on form now.

You must be enjoying yourself, because you are now expressing opinions that are relevant and meaningful. It doesn't matter whether anyone agrees with them or not. They are adding another dimension to the rich tapestry of debates on this forum.

It's splendid work. Luv 'em.

Uncle Albert

Where are all the PL doubters now? The guy is different class to our previous god knows how many managers.

Superb result today and great travelling fans too. Well done one and all.

Looking forward to the villa match now.

Black Country Wanderer

You couldn't write it could you

Saville, Iorfa ,Hause ,Evans ,Williamson, pretty much all written off by most on here, yet we perform like that?

PL has a problem or two, it seems we actually do have a squad

I presume we will go back to our "strongest" team for Villa, and the defence will give away more silly goals, but its Wolves and no more than anyone expects I guess

Enjoy the day folks, lets hope theres more to come

well played lads, now leave the captain out for good, he has made some many mistakes and caused us to lose the game. Williamson should be made captain s he can Marshall to troops and what a difference he will make. Onwards and upwards and start to climbing the league.

Cradley Wolf

Brilliant comment spaldingwolf unlike a couple on here who seem to think that the sun shines out of the idiots backside !!

Sir Billy Quiet

You can't enjoy a win without taking the opportunity to slag off one of our players, absolutely pathetic.....

The Flying Winger

S B Q, I agree I thought we were a club and all players were striving for a good performance, calling our captain an idiot! this is one game Williamson played well but it's one game he is injury prone so we will have to see.

Batth and Stearman was our best partnership until the last regime split it up, it has only just been reinstated.

Agreed Sir BQ ..CW still ain't engaged brain !!

i'll ask you and all the other idiots who think the sun shines out of Batth's backside the same question I asked Wolvereeeen yesterday to which i'm still awaitng a reply

Name 5 good points about Batth that merit his inclusion in the Wolves squad...

The awkwardly articulated inference being that 'if you don't HATE HATE HATE a wolves player (that C-Wolf loathes) then you obviously MUST believe they are a sun god', Right?

Will you EVER emerge from that endless, dark, dank, lifeless tunnel you lurk in and try to breathe some fresh air once in awhile and see some colour, you might even enjoy it.

As usual - you refer to the club captain, and lifelong WOLVES player, as an 'idiot'

Does that make you a Wolves FAN in Mordor?

And here was me thinking this was a time for celebration - beating a Prem club on their own patch.

Wandering Wolf

Amazing result... well done to all the team.... however remember august away win at Newcastle 0-2.... and then the next few months... feet on the ground and don't get carried away... this is the wolves we support thru a heart attack life style

This is on a pa with Paul Lambert's Leaguer One Colchester United thrashing the newly relegated Norwich 7-1 a few short years ago.

Lambert is our best signing since Bully.

I'm afraid that when Captain Calamity (DB) is in the team, he gives his team-mates the jitters. Keep him out of the team for a while for his own benefit.

Sir Billy Quiet

As if Lambert gives a flying toss what you and the other player haters think, do us all a favour and dance somewhere else.

Well said SBQ. Come on Cradley, HOW OFTEN HAVE YOU ACTUALLY SEEN DANNY BATTH PLAY????? Were you, for example, at Sheffield Wednesday, where he was excellent? You just have it in for one player, and cannot let it go. You and your ilk are what has cost Wolves over the years. Your negativity prevents players from trying to do do the exceptional, as they know if it goes wrong, people like you will crucify them. When they don't try the exceptional, you use that against them to say that they are ordinary, or worse. THAT is why people look ordinary for us, then move on elsewhere and look like much better players. That is why so many come back with their new team, and make it a habit of scoring against us.

Call me what you like, but you will never be able to say that I ever booed one of my own players. (My guess is that IF YOU WERE THERE when Danny Batth was booed, you were giving him what for.) Do you really think that you and others like you benefit Wolves? YOU DON'T.

To be fair (and i'm trying not to laugh as I type that)... I'm sure that there's a Cradley Sandwell, a Cradley Villian, a Cradley Saddler, a Cradley Sky Blue, a Cradley Evertonian, a Cradley Toon, a Cradley Bluebird, a Cradley Pompey, a Cradley Grecian, a Cradley Alexandrian, a Cradley Mackem, a Cradley Tiger, a Cradley... ohh, you get the idea... The hater-for-hate-sakers are at every club. They attach themselves to football teams because their kind of bigotry is tolerated and, through the internet, has a safe outlet.

I get the feeling that in real life Cradley is aggressve and confrontational, just as his posts are. He probably considers that to be "normal" behaviour, as is his denigration of someone who has given his heart and soul to this club.

Baath has had a run of form not up to his own expectations, and being possibly rested may well do him some good( though his last game at Sheffield was a blinder).

What never does players or a club any good is a barrage of carping, moronic criticism from "supporters" who have little appreciation of either the game, or of how to get the optimum out of people, and whose grammar and punctuation reflects their intelligence.

Danny Baath will be back, and will do well, if only to make the likes of Cradley eat humble pie, should they understand what that is.

Cradley Wolf

S B season ticket holder Breretonwolf, seen him play loads of times and possibly out of 100% of games, he's had a good game in 35% of them !!

Like dances says when he plays he gives all the other players around him the jitters.

Batth IS NOT an exceptional player he never has been and NEVER will be, he is mostly a liability and should be got rid of. I would rather see E E L, Hause or Iorfa alongside Williamson for the rest of the season rather than him. It makes no sense to me as to why there are a few on here who will defend him to the hilt even when he has cost us games which has been more than not over the years he has been at the club !! They think the sun shines out of his backside and that he can do no wrong well i'm sorry but a defenders job is to defend not just to turn up when you feel like it which he undoubtedly does !!

Oh for the likes of Frank Munro and John McAlle or going further back to the best defenders ever at Molineux Bill Slater and George Showell !!

You really are missing the point Cradley.

No one is critical of your democratic right to exercise your opinion of Danny Baath or anyone else.

However, I am highly critical of your aggressive, thoroughly nasty, and undermining tone towards him on a personal level.Do you disrespect others in your life the way you disrespect him? If you do, then I feel most sorry for those whose company you keep. How does that help him or the club?

Sir Billy.

Cradley says he is a season ticket holder but he doesn't say which season...!

Cradley Wolf

BeeCee I have been a season ticket holder for more years than you have had hot dinners little boy people can voice their opinions on these threads it is called freedom of speech just because you and your ilk don't like what is written about the brierley bonk numpty, TOUGH !!!

Like I say out iof all the games he's played in he has probably averaged around 35% of having a good game which leaves 65% where he has been absolutely dire and if you wiped the crap out of your eyes you'd see that !!!!

A season ticket holder for more years than I have had hot dinners eh...!

Well they must have affected your bowel movement with all that effluence you produce in your post.

My wish is that Danny finds the form to silence those who wish to destroy one of our own. Distance yourselves from me.

Why can't people just enjoy the great performance without having a go at the players who didn't play.

the big dog

Williamson and Stearman, two experienced centre backs, enough said

Sir Billy Quiet

Birmingham away, Newcastle away and now Stoke away, yes it's been a tough season but travelling away has its rewards....

Proud to be a Wolves fan.

The Flying Winger

S B Q, Yes travelling away means they are not playing in front of some of the fans who probably write comments on here then take it out of them at home with the first mistake.

You should always win all your home matches, Yes....

Excellent result against a strong Stoke City and an important one to be able to take into the Villa match.

Please though could the growing army of Danny Batth haters put a sock in it. Granted our team captain is no Franz Beckenbauer and at best is an average Championship centre half and has cost us goals recently but he is still young enough to improve and quite possibly could do so alongside Williamson. We have won the game Batth hasn't even played yet there still seem to be more negative comments aimed at him than there are positive comments towards the team. By the way, we still haven't had a goal from a centre forward. This surely has to be the area that needs addressing in this transfer window and possibly the next.

The Flying Winger

wolvesmatt, a voice of reason.

I hear Rooney may be free shortly.

Wolvesmatt - agree with your comments. IMO Batth could be a good stopper centre half. Can't understand the name- calling from so-called supporters. Today is a chance to be a happy fan. Hope for another Prem scalp next round.

Wow football never fails to amaze , well done is not nearly enough but one thing is for certain Fosun need to get Costa signed permanently and the more they play the better Cav gets too, if its to late for this season let's watch the work in progress become a force next, l think that's what Fosun really wanted and Walter got the plan wrong Come on Wolves ay we

I would like to see us sign Costa permanently too, I think perhaps another year at this level would be better for him rather than a move to a Premier League substitutes bench.

Somehow though I think this season will be his first and last with us

The Flying Winger

Has he any brothers, cousins Etc!

101 chicken chow mein

Just back from the game the boys did us proud.

101 chicken chow mein

still buzzing from the game fantastic performance i cant believe so called fans on here whingeing, celebrate the successes and ditch the negativity for once.

That was special for many reasons; 6 changes; play a 16 year old; Stoke field a strong side etc.

Delighted for Lambert and the many 'Squad' players today.

So pleased Williamson came through so well. Fit, he is just what we need at the

An exceptional effort.........

Some very bitter posters on here tonight. We've just had a great win and still some fans have to have a go. Please don't keep dissing our players it does you no credit.

How very true She. I do sometimes wonder if they are intruders from you know where...!

HiBeeCee. Great win yesterday, but some of the disrespectful comments on here are way out of order. We all have our opinions and right that we don't always agree, but the sheer spite and nastiness I really cannot understand. I, along with a lot of others, did not expect a win, but oh the joy. I've not even shouted at my husband this weekend so I must feel happy. Seriously though he is my rock at the moment. Cheers mate.

I can't understand their attitudes either. I can remember standing on the south bank with supporters of many many supporters of the visiting teams enjoying the banter (even with Glasgow Rangers ones) and the game. There was none of the silly nonsense that surrounds supporters these days.

Like yourself I don't get to go much at all now at 80 years but I will not have a nasty word said about Wolves or Wolverhampton. Even my dear wife of 50+ years will vouch for that.

Yes as with your husband she is my rock and knows better anyway........ lol

Danny Batth could learn a lot from Williamson, i have had a go at Danny many times but to be fair to him who has he had to learn off, all our young players need good pro"s to advance in the game. PL needs to get 2 or 3 quality players in and then our younger players will get better and better. when Adam & Allan came on at half time the game changed and thats what we need now, A home Draw next please,

Cookley Wolf

Well done to the lads, the manager and the 4600 travelling support. Great result, hoping we get a good draw now for Round 4.

A wonderful game and win today. That makes it even more unbelievable that some of the "fans" here can just concentrate on moaning about a player that is Wolves through and through. Yes, he has made his mistakes, bu who hasn't during this first half of the season? His problem is thatmistakes in the defence are so easy to spot (and comment on, obviously). All of the players have had their ups and downs so far, but it is difficult to see that they are being supported by gutter and slagging from pathetic people commenting on everything. UTW, the team we love and support, no matter what.

Well done lads and we'll done to the 46 hundred fans too. Must admit a reply was the best I hoped for. Must pull out the stops and get get Costa, Williaimson fine game we all knew he had it in him, just a matter of getting him on the pitch, even the calamities alongside him raised their performance. Why is it we always seem to play better against better opposition? Lambert know this too and is hoping we land a good draw in the next round.

After all this our top priority is climbing the league and three points against Villa will do nicely

Cradley Wolf I see you still haven't engaged your brain before commenting ...I have never been a avid supporter of Danny Batth so why would you direct your question to me......although I think he should not be captain I still think its unfair to call him an Idiot for trying his best to do his job after all, we all make mistakes but maybe yours or mine aren't in the public eye quite as much....don't forget defenders don't mature until 27 years plus so he has a lot of time in which to learn off an older head such as Williamson or even Stearman

By the way Cradley I do not call you names during my posts so I object to being called an Idiot !!

Mind you that's quite acceptable from a bigoted Moron !!

This site is so funny. Why would anyone look anywhere else for a laugh?

"I don't call you names... bigoted Moron !!"

I wish I had written that. Satire at it's very best.

Luv it.

I'm going to have to have another lie down. I don't call you names, (ha,ha,aha, too funny.)

Cradley Wolf

herewolf how long have you been watching Wolves ?

not very long i'm sure, maybe like Olly The Cat you want them lot

from Sandwell in Europe next season oh my gawd so funny !!!

Crerdley Wulf.

From one little 80 year old boy, a bit of advice.

Get off your high horse and for goodness sake GROW UP...!
