Paul Lambert has assured Wolves fans that he is keen to nurture the club's burgeoning youngsters from its highly-rated academy.

Wolves' current crop of talents is highly regarded at the club with hopes high for Bright Enobakhare, Connor Ronan, Niall Ennis and Morgan Gibbs-White, as well as several others.

Under-23 boss Scott Sellars said after last week's 4-0 demolition of Accrington Stanley in the Checkatrade Trophy that he hoped Lambert had taken note.

The new Wolves boss has indeed watched the game – and was impressed with what he saw.

"They were excellent," he told the Express & Star. "I'm keeping an eye on them and I was really pleased with them.

"I don't want to name names but there are some top kids in there.

"It's important they stay on the right path, but if they keep performing the way they are then I'll be really pleased – there's a lot of talent."

Lambert takes charge of his first game on Saturday when Wolves visit Preston.

Ahead of the clash he said he wants to see his team on the front foot – and to not concede another early goal.

"I've said already we need to be a bit more robust in games and we've got to start games better," he added.

"We've given too many goals in early part of the games. We'll try, if we can, to get on the front foot and go and try and win.

"When you have a lot of new lads it takes a bit of time to adapt. And the league, as everybody knows, is unforgiving, with physical games, balls coming into the box, games on Saturday-Tuesday-Saturday-Tuesday."

Aside from an ill-fated few months at Blackburn, this is Lambert's first Championship stint since he led Norwich to the title in 2011. Is the league harder now?

"You look at the three teams that came down – Villa, Newcastle and Norwich – they have their big squads, plus parachute payments," Lambert added. "Is the Championship stronger since we did it at Norwich? Yes it probably is.

"But that just evolves through football as the years go by. And Wolves is a big, huge club. So let's see what happens."
