Steve Bruce 'not close' to getting Wolves job this summer
New Villa boss Steve Bruce says he wasn't close to being in the away dugout at this evening's derby against Wolves – but he did think he had got the Molineux job after Mick McCarthy's sacking in 2012.
The former Hull City boss was heavily linked with Wolves after leaving the Tigers in the close season before it was decided Walter Zenga was the man to take over after the sacking of Kenny Jackett just a week after the Fosun takeover.
However, Bruce said: "No I don't think I was close. It was the timing really. I'd just left Hull and it wasn't the right time so I wasn't really close."
But asked if he came close to taking the job in 2012, he added: "I thought I had it then. Then there was a change of heart at midnight." And he joked "I didn't go to the pictures on Wednesday night, I have to tell you, in case I got the phone call that they (Villa) changed their minds!"
