Amid all the drama and excitement of the multi-million pound takeover by Chinese investors Fosun Group, there wasn't a single mention from the Wolves hierarchy on Jackett's fate.

Two lengthy statements by Steve Morgan and Fosun's Jeff Shi failed to address the matter, with the only reference to Jackett being Morgan offering his 'deepest thanks' to the head coach.

Meanwhile, new Spain boss Julen Lopetegui revealed he turned down the Wolves job.

Lopetegui said yesterday: "I had an agreement with an English team but Spain appeared and there was nothing more for me."

That revelation would appear to make Jackett's position untenable under the new regime. Lopetegui was clearly the preferred choice – and him backing out so late in the day means Wolves need to decide whether to stick with Jackett or find an alternative.

It is believed both Morgan and Jez Moxey phoned Jackett yesterday to inform him of both the completion of the takeover and their departures from the club.

The Wolves boss, though, while appearing resigned to his fate, remains in charge, with Fosun yet to officially declare their intentions.

Until the new owners announce otherwise, Jackett and all his backroom staff continue to prepare the squad for the new season – and tomorrow's friendly at Port Vale.
