Powell is available on a free transfer after being released from Old Trafford last month.

He spent time on loan at Hull City last year – and the Tigers are also thought to be interested, along with a host of Championship clubs including Blackburn Rovers.

The deal is not believed to be dependent on any looming takeover.

Wolves are yet to offer a contract but have spoken to Powell's representatives and are interested in pursuing a deal.

Powell left hometown club Crewe in 2012 to join United for £4m and was hailed as one of the country's brightest prospects.

However he departed Old Trafford with only 10 first team appearances to his name, spending a chunk of those four years on loan at Wigan Athletic, Leicester City and then Hull.

Wolves' only signing so far this summer is goalkeeper Andy Lonergan.

Their Championship campaign kicks off precisely one month today, away at Rotherham United.
