The Wolves midfielder is now preparing for the knockout stages of Euro 2016 after playing in all three games as Chris Coleman's side finished top of Group B in France.

Wales will face Northern Ireland in Paris in the round of 16 on Saturday (5pm). And the 30-year-old former Shrewsbury Town player is relishing the challenge.

Edwards said: "It tops everything I have done. It's just the whole experience of playing in a major tournament and to be in the squad.

"These are the things you dream about as a kid," said Edwards. "To start against Slovakia and to play quite big parts in the other two games has been a fabulous experience.

"I've been away from my wife and kids for a month and it means the whole emphasis is on football.

"The only thing that comes close is the QPR game when we won the Championship title at Wolves. But this tops it to have a whole nation behind you."

Finishing top means Wales should have an easier path than England but Edwards isn't too concerned who they play.

He said: "We've watched all the games and we don't fear anyone; we look at where we have finished and it takes some of the big hitters out.

"Our aim was always to get out of the group and anything above that would be a bonus."

Edwards' belief is fuelled by his conviction that, in three-goal Gareth Bale, Wales have the best player in the tournament.

He said: "I genuinely think we have the best player in Gareth Bale and one of the best in Aaron Ramsey, so we have nothing to fear.

"He's a great player but off the pitch he's a nice boy and he has this great passion for Wales.

"Considering what a great player he is, is great as a team-mate and for the fans to know. But, football-wise, he's the best I've ever played with.

"How on earth anyone can be better is beyond me because he's quicker, stronger, more skilful, better in the air than anyone I've seen."
