The Irishman was named fans' player of the year and players' player of the year.

And he also scooped the goal of the season award for his stunning 35-yard strike against Fulham.

"I'm very proud and a bit shocked - it feels pretty good," Doherty said on collecting the main prize of the fans' player of the year gong.

"This will give me more confidence. I'm confident anyway but this can only help going forward.

"Thanks to the fans. Keep supporting us - we'll be back ready to attack the Championship."

The 24-year-old pipped Jack Price to the award, while James Henry was third.

In the players' player award, Carl Ikeme finished runner-up behind Doherty.

Doherty has only been a regular in Kenny Jackett's first team from late December onwards, but the prize is reward for a string of consistent performances at left-back – a position he has made his own despite traditionally being known as a right-back.

His form also earned him a debut call-up to Martin O'Neill's Republic of Ireland squad.

Other awards handed out at the ceremony, held at the Telford International Centre, included Dominic Iorfa being named young professional of the season for the second year running.

The England Under-21 regular said of 2015/16: "It's been a massive learning curve, some good games, some bad games, I've learned from it and enjoyed it."

And the academy player of the season went to young Irish midfielder Connor Ronan, who has recently earned praise from boss Kenny Jackett for his performances in the under-21 team this season.

Kenny Jackett spoke of his determination to succeed next season

Jackett said of this season: "Frustration is the relevant word. Ultimately, after two relatively successful seasons it is disappointing.

"The side isn't exactly where we want it to be. My determination to get the equation right is very high.

"With smart scouting we can come back with a better group. I don't want the ownership situation to be an excuse.

"I'm as hungry as ever. Nobody will be more determined to be successful as myself.

"I appreciate the criticism but fans have come out in their numbers. I can feel they're waiting to get behind a successful team."

The entire first team squad attended the event. Owner Steve Morgan, however, wasn't present.
