Kenny Jackett says it's vital that Wolves do their transfer business early – as he looks to re-shape his squad with key additions this summer.

Jackett wants more players and more quality in a bid to take Wolves from mid-table to the top six in 2016/17.

Southend's out-of-contract midfielder Jack Payne is believed to be on their shopping list, while 25-goal striker Jason Cummings is a long-standing target and it's thought Wolves will bid £1m in a bid to prise him from Hibs.

With Jackett wanting two first-team players for every position – and the emergency loan window being scrapped next season – the Wolves boss knows how important it will be to accrue targets as early as possible this summer.

He said: "It is important – very important (to do business early).

"When you look at the second half of our season, the balance of our team, the competition in some places is quite strong and in others it's not.

"That's vital. The summer is always a vital time.

"And with the changing of the loan system squad planning is vital.

"An ideal world there can be two players for every position, and leave at the right time enough space for some young players to come through because every year there has to be that scope.

"I think it would be a good thing if we did have a bigger squad, without the option of taking an emergency loan. Whether we will or not I don't know."

Wolves were bringing the curtain down on their season at home to Sheffield Wednesday today.

The players will take seven weeks off before reporting back at Compton Park on June 27.

Jackett added: "The people that I work for know where we need to strength. They know my thoughts and they agree.

"The summer is always a key time for squad building.

"Last summer we were working on Nouha Dicko and Benik Afobe and building around that. That soon – for various reasons – fell away from us.

"The summer is a key time, to plan, to make adjustments, to improve from the halfway team we've been this season.

"There is a backdrop of the club being up for sale. That balance between adding the right players and your own players improving is the ideal for us."
