Boss Kenny Jackett has outlined where he thinks Wolves need to strengthen this summer – and believes he can build the team's attack around Joe Mason.

The Wolves boss has already talked up the importance of Wolves' post-season spending, and wants two first-team players in every position to equip his squad for a promotion campaign.

The need for new strikers – particularly if Bjorn Sigurdarson departs and the on-loan Adam Le Fondre isn't signed permanently – is obvious.

As well as Mason, Wolves have just Nouha Dicko and youngster Bright Enobakhare on their books up front.

And Jackett said of what else Wolves need: "I don't think we're blessed with natural left siders – I think we're quite open down the left, certainly our distribution and our service and our chances created hasn't really been there.

"And we have got a shortage of forwards, definitely.

"If we're looking after those two very big issues, maybe one experienced player to really pull things together would help.

"But obviously, as ever, it needs to be a good player.

"They're the keys for me."

Mason ended a 12-game goal drought – of which six had been starts – when he netted the opening goal at Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

It was his third in Wolves colours, and the 24-year-old former Cardiff City striker spoke afterwards of his relief at getting 'the monkey off my back'.

Jackett clearly sees huge potential in Mason.

And the Wolves boss said the £3m man could be the focal point for his team's attack next season as he bids to transform a front-line that has struggled for goals in the second half of the current campaign.

"Yes I do think we could build it around him," Jackett said.

"Anyone that has the ability to score, and finish, like he does, I think you should consider how you go.

"He doesn't need that many chances to score. And even in a quiet game he gets chances.

"That's been a feature of his time at Wolves.

"And from our point of view this should be capitalised on."

Mason was paired with James Henry in a 4-4-1-1 formation at the City Ground.

Jackett has maintained that Mason needs a physical striker alongside him – and hasn't wavered from that view.

"My overall feeling is he's a 4-4-2 player, second striker, and needs some physical presence up there with him," Jackett said.

"James Henry played the role reasonably well.

"The formation centred about getting a second forward to support Mason, that was the reason for it, and it didn't do badly.

"Joe's best ability is on the back line and getting in behind.

"He's come in as a number 10 which has probably taken him away from the goalscoring areas and I don't think necessarily suits his strengths.

"What he is, he's very good at getting on and reading a flick.

"And his movement in behind defenders is very natural.

"He pulls away and without being, let's say, obviously quick, he gets down the sides and in behind defenders well through timing and ability.

"He takes responsibility himself, he looks at himself, and he's a good character and an honest lad.

"He wants to get stronger physically and go right up front as a number nine and score goals.

"I see that being his future."
