The statement comes as the number of signatures on a petition calling on Wolves to reconsider the agreement continues to rise.

The petition has so far been signed by more than 2,100 people who believe that the company's practices 'do not fit with the ethics of the football club'.

The Money Shop is a high street payday loan firm which has worked with Wolves since 2009 and already sponsors Molineux's South Bank, but has this week been elevated to the position main club sponsor.

The three-year agreement will see The Money Shop printed on the front of Wolves shirts.

Wolves' head of marketing and communications Matt Grayson today said the club were aware of the petition, but continue to 'look forward' to a long-term relationship with The Money Shop.

He said: "The Money Shop have been a major stand sponsor at Molineux for the last seven years.

"They have 250 high street stores, are fully regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority, and short-term loans are just one part of a range of diversified financial products which they offer.

"They are going above and beyond regulation in promoting financial transparency and the bigger main club sponsorship of Wolves gives them a significant media platform to champion this message.

"The Money Shop have signed a three-year deal with Wolves as main sponsor as a signal of their long-term intent to work with the club on a number of fan and community projects.

"We look forward to continuing to work with The Money Shop as we have done successfully for the last seven years."

In addition to short-term loans, The Money Shop also offers pawnbroking, guarantor loans, cash to gold, retail jewellery and travel money services. The firm has several stores around the Black Country and one shop in Wolverhampton.
